Why is BIOS update failing? | DELL Technologies
February 15, 2025 - The command line switches in this post produced errors, which led me to try /? and that gave me /s /r as switches with which to run the bios executable from within Windows (I booted into Win10 for this). So I ran the bios exe with /s /r /l c:\log.txt, the machine rebooted and it went through the bios update process. Re-installed my previosuly upgraded Win 11 disk and now Win 11 works.

r/Dell on Reddit: BIOS update failed
January 24, 2022 -
I have a Dell gaming G3 laptop. I have owned it for just under a year now and never had issues. This morning, I turned it on and the screen has a Dell logo in the middle, and says “BIOS update failed” with a progress bar at 0%. After some quick Googling, I’m terrified. What do I do? I didn’t even tell it to do any update.

The BIOS update will fail if the battery is below x% (x varies by model). Most models is 15% but I've seen some need as much as 70% before it will allow your update to proceed. In the vast majority of cases you just need to let it charge for a while and retry. If not, warranty claim for corrupted BIOS.

Why is this issue out of warranty when Dell has pushed a BIOS update after after purchase and after warranty? Doesn't Dell have an obligation to ensure that updates work properly? The answers from the community are not specific to my issue. #underwhelmedbyDELL

Power off unit. Pull out power plug. Open cover. Lift up latch and pull the CD/DVD back away from the front and lift out. Remove Hard disk cables. Slide purple latch using finger hole. Lift out the cable end of the HD drive bay and put aside. Remove the memory. Examine it carefully. The system requires 1333 or faster RAM. You probably have either 1066 MHz or a mix of 1066 and 1333 or higher. Prior to the BIOS update the system would do a quick self test and identify the RAM and boot. The updated BIOS will now only accept 1333 or higher. This is a DELL error in software development. It is a timing check very early in the very low level entry of the BIOS boot routine. I suspect it happens when the BIOS does a serial presence detect (SPD) memory check and looks at the timing. It finds what it ERRONEOUSLY believes is bad RAM. I believe it is really BAD PROGRAMMING. The fix is to test with a stick or 2 of 1333 DDR3 memory. If your system has been updated, the original memory may have been 1333 and the add-in memory only 1066. If so take out the 1066 and test it. If it comes to life with 1333 memory, you know the system is OK. Find some 1333 memory and put it in. Re-assemble everything.

Trouble updating BIOS on Dell computer Solved - Windows 10 Forums
February 11, 2022 - I did some more digging and found that the flash drive had to be set up as a bootable flash drive, which mine was NOT. I first clicked on the .exe file around 9 AM this morning and its 7 PM now but apparently the whole process should only take a few minutes. I've received no error messages but when I try to launch the .exe again, it tells me its already running. It's just not DOING anything visible and it's not showing any error messages. I'm wondering if I can kill the BIOS update process, recreate the flash drive so it is bootable, put the .exe file on it, and then try the BIOS update again WITHOUT destroying the computer in the process.

You don't need the System Mech program. This is what DellCares told me to do on Twitter: Power ON the machine, tap F2 key on the startup Dell logo, it takes you to the BIOS screen. Move to 'Boot' tab, Select 'Boot list options' , change the option from 'Legacy' to 'UEFI'. Restart the machine, it should load fine to Windows. ----- I should note that several other people on twitter had already told me to try the same thing. One person explained why this happened. He said that the BIOS update changed the boot option to legacy when it should be UEFI. Going into the BIOS and changing it back fixed the problem, so he is probably right.

Same problem here. My laptop is about 4 months old, never had problems. Dell forced the update to BIOS 1.2.2 -- and BOOM. No boot device found. I got in by pressing f12 and getting into the boot menu and booting to the UEFI partition (or something like that). Now I'm backing everything up, and will be attempting to roll back my BIOS to something older.

December 21, 2021 - Some of the affected users have shared detailed procedures that can be used to downgrade their BIOS to an older version using SupportAssist OS Recovery to solve this issue. It's also important to mention that laptops impacted by this issue might still have boot problems until you disconnect the battery, push the power button for 15 seconds, and plug back in the battery and charger before powering up again. However, you also have the option to first try Dell's official guidance on how to downgrade the system BIOS, fix a computer not booting up, troubleshoot POST issues, and solve boot issues using SupportAssist OS Recovery.
