r/Dell on Reddit: Stuck on Firmware Update for 2 hours . Help!!
February 11, 2022 - Their firmware update utility is spotty as hell and always has been, so just go to the product support update page for your model and download all known current updates one at a time as individual installation files; you're always better off doing the BIOS update separately by itself in-between reboots anyway, and you can manually suspend BitLocker, which I recommend doing from PowerShell and immediately before running the standalone installer. You can even set it up to leave BitLocker off until you manually turn it back on from CLI again when done, solves a world of problems. Give it another hour and if it still doesn't snap out of it just do the hard power cycle and hope for the best; Dells rarely brick over a borked BIOS install anymore.

How long should SupportAssist BIOS update take normally? | DELL Technologies
March 3, 2021 - It should not take several hours to update the BIOS. I would not recommend using SupportAssist for updating the BIOS. At the very least, use the Dell Update program, but the preferred method can be found in this topic.

Yes, using a normal monitor 'may' fix this issue you are experiencing. Well, the updates for the bios are usually marked critical ( not always anyway ), but mainly because they could be fixing some security issue with the intel cpu. Thing is, as far as I know there are no real exploits in the wild + there's the antivirus and the fixes added to windows... so all these bios fixes effectively slow down the cpu only, from my personal point of view. Unless one of the newer bioses adds support to a quicker ram ( example ) or adds support for an USB-C port of a graphics card you ARE using or planning to buy ( it's a real case scenario )... or fixes a bug you ar experiencing ( you are not , by your own admission, having issues up to now )... just avoid . Personal opinion, anyway.

While waiting for a reply I read and watched a lot about updating the BIOS. My current version is 2.16.1 on a Win 10 Pro build 19044.2251.After 2 hours of a black screen, I crossed my fingers and powered down. Rebooted.I pulled everything off, anything connected to the computer, pulled drives, trying to get to a bare bones system. Double check that I did not have BitLocker on, no passwords in BIOS.I tried again with 2.17.1, same thing. Tried with booting to USB, same thing.Did a bunch of other updates, no problem.Tried 2.18.1, same problem. The only thing I have not tried is going backwards with the BIOS. At this point I put everything back together because I have to work on some images. But I would like to be able to update the BIOS.So still looking for suggestions.

March 19, 2019 - I agree with Hal. If you want to update the computer's BIOS, I would go to http://support.dell.com, enter your service tag number, and download the latest BIOS. I'm guessing that what you're seeing is actually a Windows or driver update.

How Long Should SupportAssist BIOS Update take? | DELL Technologies
June 28, 2019 - I had those flashing dots saying "Installing" for 5 hours. They finally stopped and I got a message that drivers had been installed and to re-boot my computer. I did that. I just checked with Dell Update and it shows that the BIOS update is available so apparently it wasn't installed.

BIOS Upgrade taking way too long. | DELL Technologies
January 30, 2008 - I actually turned off the system, but although most people will say that it won't boot, it still booted normally, and loaded Windows XP like normal. I don't know what went on, but it sure seemed like no upgrade even happened. ... Sounds like bad memory to me. Use memtest86 to find out. Are you trying to upgrade the bios from floppy, or did you use an exe file in windows?

I've been wrestling with that same issue yesterday afternoon and this morning. The Lat 7420 became very slow to get from a shut down condition just to the initial Dell circle logo, varying between 1-2 minutes. Once the Dell logo appeared it seemed to open Windows in the normal time. Initially I thought it was related to the dock it was connected to, but it did the same thing with another dock, or just plugged into the AC adapter. I also tried setting the SSD as a priority in the UEFI list, but that made no difference. Nor did any of the other BIOS settings I tried. After searching and finding your question on the Dell Community, it prompted me to backdate the BIOS, which had been updated to the latest (1.9.6) at some point earlier. So I downloaded BIOS version 1.8.2 from the Dell Lat 7420 support site download page and after installation (for some reason that backdate didn't fully complete until after a second restart), the time it took it took for the Dell circle logo to appear from a fresh start was much quicker. I then downloaded the next BIOS version, 1.9.3, and installed that, and the improvement still held. Then to confirm whether the issue might be related specifically to the latest BIOS update, I downloaded and installed the latest version (1.9.6) and immediately the time from pushing the On button to Dell circle logo increased to more than a minute. So I backdated to 1.9.3 and it's back to normal. You might try backdating yours to see if that improves the situation. So it appears to NOT be related to any of the Windows settings or configuration, and at least in my case, is an issue with the latest Latitude 7420 BIOS (1.9.6). I have no idea whether this relates to all Lat 7420's or not, but I've got 2 more to provision in the next couple days, and I'll see if one or both are affected. BK PS- I registered for the Dell Community specifically to reply to this issue. Hope it helps.

Yes, changed to that already, might have improved a bit, but not a lot, still takes at least 30sec.
