r/buildapc on Reddit: Need Advice: Dell Precision T7920 Workstation (Dual CPU, Xeon Gold 6148, 128GB RAM, Quadro GPU) vs PC Build
February 23, 2025 -
Hi everyone,
I’m considering getting a Dell Precision T7920 Workstation for my company. The specs are:
Dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs
128GB RAM
Quadro GPU
I need advice on two things:
Workstation vs PC Build: Would getting this single workstation be more beneficial for engineering tasks (like CAD, simulations, rendering, etc.) compared to building a PC? Would it be more powerful and reliable for heavy workloads?
Distributing Power or Linking Devices: I’ve heard that it’s possible to distribute the power of this workstation to multiple devices or link it with other systems. Is this true? If so, how does it work, and is it practical for engineering workflows?
Any insights or experiences with this workstation or similar setups would be greatly appreciated!

Workstation might be more reliable, depends on if you spec it with a redundant power supply, ECC RAM, and how good the cooling is. Keep in mind the Xeon chips have relatively low per-core performance compared to high-end desktop chips. The primary benefit is high memory capacity and PCI-E bandwidth. If you are spending this kind of money on a workstation you should research if your applications will favour this kind of setup, or ideally run your own benchmarks. If you do need the memory capacity and PCI-E bandwidth look at a Threadripper or EPYC build, the per-core performance is higher and the total core count scales much higher. https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/server/epyc/9005-series.html#specifications https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/workstations/ryzen-threadripper.html#specifications Distributed computing is a niche setup. It requires per application integration, most workloads do not scale this way. Above all else, do not build a system yourself. The headache of being responsible for every individual component is not worthwhile in a corporate job. Go with one of the major OEM's, or a professional builder like Puget Systems. https://www.pugetsystems.com/solutions/3d-design-workstations/blender/buy-359/

It depends on the parts of the software and the software you use. Fluid simulation uses resources differently than mechanical modeling. Some engineering software is much more performant on Quadro type GPUs and some runs much faster per dollar on consumer grade cards. What are you working on?

@IndustryStandard , yes, Xeon E5-2640 v3 should work. But E5-2670 v3 or E5-2680 v3 would give you best value. You can find used one for less than 100 USD on eBay server stores. More cores and lower TDP (120w), it also will work with your existing heatsink. You are right about this workstation is picky about ECC memory. Adding memory to your system will required a bit more work. Using memory configuration chart for your system to find which will be the best configuration to add more capacities you needed with the least cost. Getting the same clock, rank, will keep them running at optimal (2133 MHz). In return, your upgrade will be problem free.
