Dell firmware update is frozen. Been over 3 hours. How do I
Firmware update stuck
Videos
Hey guys, I recently bought a local Dell PC for casual web browsing and a bit of office work — nothing heavy. But since the day I bought it, every time I try to update Windows or restart after an update, it always shows:
“Updating your firmware” Dell logo → Flash progress: 0%
And it just stays stuck there for hours. Even if I leave it overnight, it doesn’t move. The only way to get it back is by turning off the plug and restarting manually. Sometimes it works, sometimes the same screen appears again.
This is the third time this happens to me with a brand new, expensive Dell laptop. It seriously affects my workday. At some point during the night, the laptop decides to update its firmware, and gets itself stuck at zero, until the morning when I arrive at the office. Now, I have no way of starting the computer, as it wont power down. Its fans are going loud and there is no progress. Please, can anyone assist with this? What do I do?
Hi EricaRW,
My name is Merlina, I am an Independent Advisor and a user like yourself. I'll do my best to help you.
I'm sorry to know that you are experiencing a continuous loop on your PC and can't enter WinRe.
Since when the issue started? Are there any changes made before the issue? How long it is doing the loop? please give it at least an hour. Your PC may be updating.
Other steps you can try:
- Disconnect any external devices or peripherals (e.g. USB drives, printers, etc.) from your Dell XPS and try booting it up again.
- If the issue persists, force your Dell XPS to shut down by holding down the power button for at least 10 seconds. Then turn it back on.
- As soon as you see the Dell logo, press and hold the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Select "Repair Your Computer" using the arrow keys and press Enter.
- Select your language and keyboard layout preferences, and then enter your login credentials.
- In the "Choose an option" screen, select "Troubleshoot" and then "Advanced options."
- From the "Advanced options" screen, try using the "Startup Repair" option to automatically diagnose and repair any issues preventing your Dell XPS from booting properly.
- If the startup repair option doesn't work, you can also try using the "System Restore" option to restore your Dell XPS to an earlier point in time before the update was installed.
Let me know the result. Thank you!
You're very much welcome EricaRW.
It seems like your issue was fixed when you reverted to the December restore point.
If you have further concerns, please don't hesitate to reach back. Thank you.
