Experiencing a Dell G15 Gaming Laptop that won't turn on and displays a blank screen can be concerning, and there could be various reasons behind this issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem: 1. Check the Power Adapter and Outlet: Ensure that the power adapter is plugged into both the laptop and a functional power outlet. Verify that the power adapter's LED indicator is on, indicating it's providing power. 2. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the laptop from the power source. Remove the battery, if possible. Hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power. Reconnect the battery and power adapter. Attempt to power on the laptop. 3. Test Different Power Outlet: Try connecting the laptop to a different power outlet to rule out any issues with the original outlet. 4. Check for LED Indicators: Look for any LED indicators on the laptop that might provide information about its status, such as power and battery indicators. 5. Test with External Display: Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using the appropriate cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.). If the external display shows an image, it might indicate a display-related issue on the laptop's screen. 6. Re-seat RAM and Storage: If you're comfortable with opening the laptop's back cover, try re-seating the RAM modules and storage drive. Sometimes loose connections can cause startup issues. 7. Check for Overheating: Overheating can cause laptops to shut down to protect the hardware. Make sure the laptop's vents and fans are not obstructed by dust or debris. 8. BIOS Reset: Some issues can be related to incorrect BIOS settings. Reset the BIOS to its default settings: Turn off the laptop. Press and hold the appropriate key (often F2) to access the BIOS settings. Look for an option to reset the BIOS settings to default. 9. Perform a System Restore: If the issue started after a recent software change, you can try performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was functioning correctly. 10. Contact Dell Support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to contact Dell's customer support for further assistance. There could be underlying hardware issues that require professional attention. Remember that troubleshooting hardware issues can sometimes involve complex steps. If you're not comfortable with these steps, seeking assistance from Dell's customer support or a professional technician is advisable. Answer from AdrianG001 on dell.com

The problem is as the title says. I bought this crap less than a month ago! I just turned it off normally 2 hrs earlier. I come back, turn it on and this is what I have to deal with. At first, you hear the fan, and then nothing. Absolute silence and the keyboard stays lit. The battery light is off however. What can I do to get started on my own before I consider paying for repairs?

Here are some steps you can try to make sure your laptop wakes up properly after Sleep mode: Update Drivers and BIOS: Outdated drivers or BIOS firmware can sometimes cause sleep mode issues. Ensure that you have the latest drivers and BIOS updates installed for your Dell laptops. You can usually find these updates on Dell's support website. Adjust Power Settings: Sometimes, power settings can cause problems with sleep mode. Try adjusting the power settings in the Control Panel to see if it makes a difference as per the video below: Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup is a feature in Windows that can cause issues with sleep mode on some systems. Try disabling Fast Startup to see if it resolves the problem. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, then uncheck the box next to 'Turn on fast startup (recommended)'. Check for Background Processes: Sometimes, background processes or applications can interfere with sleep mode. Make sure that no unnecessary programs are running in the background before putting the laptop to sleep. Reset Power Management Settings: You can try resetting the power management settings to their default values to see if that helps. You can do this by opening an elevated Command Prompt and running the following commands: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes Contact Dell Support: If you still need assistance, please contact support by clicking the ‘Get Help Now’ button located at the bottom right corner of the page. r/Dell on Reddit: Updated Dell G15 5515 Ryzen, now only black screen
May 19, 2023 -

Haven't run the Dell Update program in a long time. I just ran it tonight, and it downloaded several drivers and a BIOS update. Restarted my computer and saw the BIOS flash. When the computer came back on, there was nothing but a black screen.

I can hear the fans running. The lights come on the keyboard. CPU light blinks on. But the screen is black. When I plug it into my monitor or TV, that screen is also black. There is no display.

I tried unplugging it, holding power for 15 seconds to force it to shut down, then taking off the back and unplugging the battery cable. Then I held the power button again for 15 seconds to reset CMOS according to the Dell support page. This didn't work.

Anyone know how I can fix this? I didn't pay much attention to what the BIOS messages were. I don't know if BIOS messed up or if I somehow lost the graphics card drivers. I've had this computer since 2021, so the warranty expired...

Please can someone help me? My machine is a precision 7530, more precisely the config i7 8850H— Quadro P2000.

After enabling the « Switchable Graphics » option in the BIOS, my machine refuses to start. When I press the power button, the keyboard and the button light up, then turn off immediately, then it repeats the loop by itself as in the video.

I don’t know what to do. I am a student, and I need this machine because I can’t afford another one.

PS : I live in Togo, a country where there is no representation of Dell. I’m not even the original owner of the machine since it’s a second-hand purchase.

PS2 : Sorry for my bad English, I’m from a French speaking country

In case it helps anyone else, I experienced similar symptoms on a Dell Latitude 5440 laptop, and here's what got things to work for me... (First, my precise symptoms were this... every time I tried to turn the machine on, the keyboard backlight (and caps lock indicator) would illuminate, but the laptop's screen wouldn't show anything -- not even the Dell logo.  The laptop just seemed to freeze in this state, even if I let it sit for five or ten minutes) So what, for me, got things working again?: I held the power button down for a good 45 seconds, then booted it one last time.  It then booted as it should.  For good measure, I then used Dell Command-Update to perform all available updates and ran through all BIOS diagnostics to ensure no issues were detected.

Hey All,  The original thread had symptoms of No POST failure with no apparent flash code. It wouldn't be a true No Power scenario as we are receiving some signs of life with the keyboard coming on, even if brief. Please refer to the following troubleshooting if you are running into similar issues with a Dell system. Please be sure to view your system manual on our support site for guidance on accessing the internals of a system. Perform a hard reset: Disconnect any external devices including the AC adapter and disconnect the battery cable if able. Hold the power button down for 10 seconds (20 seconds for Alienware) Bypass any power strips, surge protectors or battery backups Verify the wall outlet is functional Reseat the battery cable if disconnected Plug only the AC adapter back into the laptop Attempt to power on the system If unresolved, please attempt a BIOS recovery: Verify that the laptop is powered OFF and disconnect the AC adapter. Press and hold the CTRL key + ESC key on the keyboard. Plug in the AC adapter to the laptop. Release the CTRL key + ESC key on the keyboard once you see the BIOS recovery screen. If the BIOS Recovery screen appears, select Reset NVRAM (if available) and press the Enter key. Select Disabled and press the Enter key to save the current BIOS settings. Select Recover BIOS and press the Enter key to start the recovery process The unit should then boot if successful If still unresolved, please attempt our Real Time Clock Reset: Turn the system off. Leave the power cable plugged into the system. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. RTC reset occurs after you release the power button. Note: Holding the power button for longer than 40 seconds will abort the RTC reset. The unit should restart a few times and power on to a time of day not set page if resolved. Should there still be no change, then at this point you will want to remove the RAM, SSD, and WLAN card if accessible for your system.  Once these parts are removed, connect the AC adapter and attempt to power on the system Locate the power LED indicator on your system. The unit should get a 2 amber, 3 white flash code error for no memory at the power LED If the 2,3 code is present, reinstall the components one at a time to see if the particular part or slot is causing a short. If a part is identified to be an issue, then look into replacing it or testing with a known good one if available If the 2,3 code is not present, then you would need to start looking into a motherboard replacement.  Refer to the following links for additional guidance: Computer Won't POST No Post Troubleshooting If assistance is needed with these steps, then contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. r/Dell on Reddit: my backlit keyboard is not working (Dell G15 5515 - Ryzen Edition)
February 29, 2024 -

I'm just about to give up on this entirely as I've already tried every solution on all of the forum threads I could find. But as a last-last ditch effort, I'll make a thread here just in case.

Here's the problem: My backlit keyboard does not work. The function key to enable it does nothing. My backlit keyboard only work for the CAPS-lock key, but that's it.

-I have installed the latest version of BIOS twice and have all of Dell's recent drivers and chipsets

-in the BIOS I have the backlit keyboard set to bright with a 15 minute timer

-I have uninstalled and reinstalled the AWCC multiple times, making sure that with each uninstall it was wiped clean of my system (removed from appdata, systemfiles, regedit, etc)

-In the AWCC, it should be mentioned that I got an error on startup that "No AlienFX devices were detected...", this was true upon multiple restarts, resetting the OS, and setting the AWCC service to boot automatically in the task manager as per one thread's recommendation. Still, nothing was detected and I couldn't think of anything else to do.

-After doing all of this, repeating many of the thread's recommendations multiple times to insure I did it correctly, I tried reinstalling the OS as a last ditch effort, but to no effect.

So... if there's any computer geeks out there smarter than me who knows how to resolve this, I'd be very much grateful. I have exhausted all of the solutions I could find online to no avail, and I can't think of any other solutions myself. I'm effectively throwing in the towel one this one because It's been a few hours already. It might just be something I have to live without. Cheers.

Hey, same problem, mine was hardware issue, I'll share what I put on the dell page: Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition Had about a year and a half of backlight being out on my computer (g15 5515 ryzen 7 edition, 3050ti, red mono backlight), just stopped working without warning or known spill onto keyboard, Caps Locks light worked. Heres an abbreviated approach. If you have the red backlit keyboard (no RBG) and your light went out you should consider at least investigating the Dell Upgrade status, and BIOS settings & versions before investigating hardware. Of course check your f5 vs Fn + f5. You should ensure the bios are set to bright (F2  every 1 sec at startup) and make sure your bios/dell are fully updated (consider re-installing bios regardless). Don't waste time with the Alienware command center as your computer will not register any Alienfx devices on the red backlight model, if you had the RBG model, you would have an FX tab in AWCC with additional lighting options. In the red backlight model, this app manages high performance (f9 button) and can scan for games. Long story short, my particular issue had to do with keyboard hardware. The backlight has a separate circuit (as does the RBG backlight, with separate input on motherboard, I hear upgrading to an RBG model from red will not work due to alienware incompatibility, but unconfirmed) and seems to have a predisposition to shorting, the caps locks light and the keyboard input run on the other circuit/keyboard ribbon (power button also has its own circuit). I don't have the experience or patience to separate and replace the keyboard from the palm rest, so I ordered a new palm rest and installed. Parts will be between $30-100, (including ifixit electronics toolkit, and actual part). Not all keyboards will be the same, may be worth it disassemble before ordering to confirm part #. Of note, if the keyboard replacement does not work, then the hardware problem is originating in the motherboard, which would be the most expensive fix ($300-450 if you do it yourself). If that did not work, I would suggest burning the computer with fire.
