Have you tried to download the recovery image from the drivers page? You have to click on details as it’s not the exe. Put that on a USB drive, put it in before turning on the computer and see if it’ll take that image. More on reddit.com

Try a reset though it is possible the adapter is having trouble. Disconnect the battery and the adapter. Then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Now reconnect everything and try again.

Thanks JOcean, I tried that again now, unfortunately it didn't lead to any changes in the laptop. The light on the computer that turns on while charging or on doesn't light up, which makes me concerned that its a motherboard or power supply issue. I guess the physical plug of the adapter itself could have some issue that isn't easy to see visually (the green light on the adapter does turn on when plugged in) - eg the laptop could be out of charge and cant get charge because of an issue with the adapter. Any other ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
