When battery capacity reach the minimum level it flashes orange to warn for sudden collapse of battery voltage - hence abrupt black-out in the bytes pump. A full cycle charge - preferably with the highest capacity charger (so the laptop can be powered also in the meanwhile) for a normal battery will turn the flashing light into green charging. (color depends on the model) When the light stays orange even while charging and the battery is more than a year old it's prolly just worn out and ready for replacement. A worn out battery won't charge. This easily measured with a power meter when the laptop is turned off with AC adapter connected. Power consumption is nearly zero in this case. A healthy and empty battery will cause the AC adapter to go on full power.

Since Dell doesn't know what is going on, I did a search for my own problelms with this. Apparently it can be a bad/dying CMOS battery. You'd think Dell would have documentation on the flashing codes... Here's the thread where I got this info. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1646354

Chopraataruun If the computer is connected to an electrical outlet, the charge indicator (icon of battery with lightning bolt) light operates as follows: • Solid blue — The battery is charging. • Flashing blue — The battery is almost fully charged. • Off — The battery is adequately charged or external power is not available to charge the battery. If the computer is running on a battery, the charge indicator light operates as follows: • Off — The battery is adequately charged, or the computer is turned off. • Flashing orange — The battery charge is low. • Solid orange — The battery charge is critically low. When the LED flashes blue, it is nearly charged, if it is flashing orange the battery charge is low. If the LED is flashing blue and orange at the same time there could be a problem. I would check in a darkened room to make sure that is what is really happening. If your battery is holding a charge, will power your notebook without the AC adapter I wouldn’t worry terribly about it. TB

The blinking pattern you’re observing on your Dell Inspiron 3558 (4 times amber followed by 1 time white) indicates a Battery Issue. Since your laptop is an older model, it’s possible that the battery has reached the end of its lifespan. Battery Replacement: You’ll need to replace the battery. You can find compatible replacement batteries for your Dell Inspiron 3558. Here’s a link to a replacement battery that you can consider. Battery Report Check: Create a battery report to check the status of your current battery. Open a Command Prompt window (search for 'cmd' in the Start menu). Type the following command and press Enter: powercfg /batteryreport This will generate a battery report. Locate the report file (usually saved in your user folder) and open it. Compare the Design Capacity value with the Full Charge Capacity value. For a healthy battery, these values should be nearly the same. Temporary fix/Workaround: Hard Reset Turn off the laptop. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery or simply remove the base cover and disconnect the battery cable. Disconnect all devices such as USB drives, printers, webcams, and media cards (SD/xD). Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to drain the residual power. Connect the AC adapter and battery. Turn on the computer. If you still need assistance, please contact support by clicking the ‘Get Help Now’ button located at the bottom right corner of the page. Solved: Due to some comments of other forum I tried a workaround. Disconnected all three plugs from battery to mainboard, pressed the on/off switch to discharge alle rest capacity of the power supply circuits. Connect the plugs again and switched on the notebook. No more blinking and it works like yesterday without any troubles. Hope that continous

That blink code is caused by a bad battery or by using a non Dell battery. Either replace the battery or if you are using a 3rd party battery replace it with a genuine Dell battery.

kmcgrane, If you look at the battery health, press F3 or Fn and F3. You should see the battery will only charge to a certain percent. Then you get the 4 orange and 1 white blinking. You run the system on battery, after a few minutes, then blinking will stop. It will not blink until the battery reaches the highest point it charges. You can also remove the battery and start the computer using the AC Adapter only and the blinking should not be there. Your battery is slowly failing. If you're under warranty, contact Dell tech Support. Most batteries are guaranteed for only 1 year. Rick

Does the laptop work fine on just the charger? · By the way the LED is amber not orange. · From Dell - “Blinking amber indicates that the system board cannot start initialization or in an S3 power state. There is a power problem, a device may be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.” · Have you run the Dell Diagnostics yet ? Tap the F12 key at the Dell splash screen on start-up. Choose Diagnostics from the menu. · If all works fine with the battery removed with just the charger, and with the information you have given, I would suggest that the battery is dead. I would also suggest getting a genuine DELL battery, if you can. · Don’t forget to check voltage on CMOS battery as well - should be 3V. · I can’t remember if that model uses IDE or SATA hard drive interface. · https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-p...

The battery is knackered. My Dell does the same until it kicks in and starts to charge, I need a new battery too. Before you start thinking the worst, buy a new battery.

Always include exact PC model and version of Windows in your posts. Suggest you reset BIOS: Power off, unplug Press/hold power button for ~15 sec Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details) Press/hold power button for ~30 sec Reinstall all RAM the way it was originally Reinstall the battery (Time for fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2) Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard Reboot If that doesn't help, repeat #1 - #4 and then leave only the module in DIMM1. (Note: DIMM1 may not be the first slot from the CPU.) Then do #6 - #8. Keep repeating this until each module is tested in DIMM1. If they all work in DIMM1, add the matching module to DIMM2) (Note: DIMM2 is probably not next to DIMM1.) Assuming that also works, keep adding RAM back until you find the bum module or the bum motherboard slot.

If take a guess you have an inspiron desktop pc with only two DIMM. one model comes to mind: inspiron 3650. LED blinking is nonspecific and you can not have unwavering faith in it. try clear cmos settings.

Thank you for your suggestions, I have run the diagnostic tool and found the error code 0132. Which means I may have to reseat the battery or replace it ? my system shows windows is updated, so I am assuming there is no need to update BIOS ? I haven’t replaced original battery in the last 5 years. Can I run the laptop with Charger for shorter duration till I fix the battery issues?

Power off computer, remove battery, connect AC adapter, and then power on system again. Please observe any blinking lights. If the blinking lights are still there, power off the system again, remove AC adapter. Press and hold down the power button for 20 seconds to drain any excess static power. Replace battery, connect adapter, and then power on system. Hopefully, there aren't any flashing lights.
