I am a medical student and a part time worker in a start up. I need a laptop that’s productive, affordable and for long term use. I will frequently use Microsoft Office, MS word, slack, google meet, ms excel etc. Also ometimes i have to read tons of pdfs. And some times hours of youtube lectures to catchup with my academics. So what i need is A fast laptop Good battery time Nice camera Stays with me for long Durable Good software Portable

I would go with a Dell Latitude. I bought mine refurbished on this eBay listing: https://ebay.us/Jpwgit and it’s been super reliable for work, it can handle Word, Excel, PDFs, and Zoom without slowing down. Battery lasts, it feels sturdy, and it’s portable enough to carry around. #ad

Lat 7000 series will be unquestionably more reliable. They'll otherwise be roughly the same performance wise, as they are same gen i5s with similar specs.
Dell Certified Refurbished Any Good?
Where are you seeing those? Dell's refurbished systems from their direct outlet have a Dell warranty, same as new (1 or 3 years, typically, depending on the model.) In my experience, the quality control is better than new ones. The price is a lot better, so as long as you can find a configuration you like, there's really no reason NOT to buy there unless you need a model that hasn't shown up on Outlet yet or you get an extraordinarily good sale (my present daily driver, a Latitude 7400 2-in-1 was new from the small business site, and cheaper than the outlet ones with a similar config, so it can happen.) I have purchased 4 from the outlet. All Alienware - 13r3, M15, 17r5 and M17. All PC purchases from the outlet come with the same as new warranty.
13r3 - arrived in like new condition. Battery wear at 5%. No other issues.
M15 - arrived in like new condition with exception of minor scuff mark on bezel (didn’t affect screen). Called them and they offered $50 credit. Battery wear 4%
17r5 - arrived in like new condition but had a battery wear level of 15%. Called them. They sent a whole new system next day air. New system was like new, battery wear 2% and they refunded $100
M17 - arrived like new. Battery wear 0%.
Overall experience with the outlet has been very good. They offer good coupons on already deep discounts and if you aren’t totally happy, they generally will offer and additional $50-100 to keep the system rather than return it. Or if there are issues, replace it quickly.
Or if you decide to return, you have 30 days to do so with no restocking fee.

Not sure if it matters, but he comes from a high-middle class family, and I come from a low-middle class family and pay for all of my college expenses.
That doesn't matter. He's already being generous by letting you borrow his laptop for the rest of the semester.
Look at sold eBay listings for that model to get a fair market value. You could probably offer a little less since you fixed it and you are roommates.
