Hi Astrong, I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution. 1. Switch off the computer. 2. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system. 3. Remove the battery from the computer. 4. Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds. 5. Then connect back all the peripherals and check if the LCD works. 8 beeps on the Dell laptop means there is an issue with the LCD display. Sometimes it may be a problem with the slot on the motherboard where the LCD display cable gets connected which could lead to motherboard faulty. To isolate if its an Lcd screen issue or systemboard we will need to check if system works on external monitor. r/Dell on Reddit: Dell XPS 13 9343 - 8 beep error code on startup when connected to display
August 24, 2025 -

Hi guys,

When rebooting my laptop, if it's connected to a display (which it literally is 100% of the time), it gives a beep error code of 8 beeps, then repeats a couple times until it fails to boot. This is unfortunate as I don't use this PC as a laptop anymore. It is always connected to a display. Temporary fix is to unplug the display from the laptop before rebooting, but I'd prefer to not have to do that. Any ideas on what this issue is or how I can fix it? My google skills are failing me.

Hi Judy, In most of the Inspiron laptops, '8 beeps' code is for the LCD failure. Pressing D and power button will initiate a diagnostics test on the LCD of your computer. May I know if this issue is intermittent or happens every time you power on the computer? However to assist you in a better way, I need to know the system model. I am adding you as a friend; please accept my friend request and send me a private message with the system Service Tag so that I can check the system details and help you further. Please reply with the information.

Hi TheNorman123 8 Beeps on startup means the LCD on system has failed, a 6 Beep code would mean you GPU. Now since you turn on and turn it off and it works fine, i would suggest running an LCD Test as well as Pre-boot System Analysis. How to run these tests ? Turn off your laptop. - LCD Test is run by holding down the 'D' key and then powering on your laptop, keep holding down 'D' you should see color bars on your LCD. - Pre boot system assesment is run by hitting the 'F12' key immediately after turning on your system and choosing 'Diagnostics' from the options displayed. As per your scenario i have a hunch of possible cabling issue since its intermittent and since your warranty expires on Jan 11. Why don't you report this problem and send it across to the Service Center for Diagnosis ? I did it last time when i had some other intermittent problem, just before my warranty was about to expire and got the suspected parts replaced. :-)

8 Beeps is definitely to do with the monitor not functioning correctly. Since you haven't mentioned this yet, is the monitor physically broken or just 'not working'? If it's not physically broken, it probably just has a loose cable. Judging by the amount of posts about this it could be a common issue with this model as you can see below.

I found a Dell Community thread regarding this topic with a couple methods mentioned that you could try if you feel up to it.

Here are some of the suggestions users have come up with in that thread:

Eight beeps means a display failure.

Since the external monitor works, you know it's not a fault with the video card.

With the notebook off, hold down the "D" key and power the notebook on. If you get solid colors on the screen, then you know the LCD is good. I would look for a problem with the video cable. Just resently, someone found that the front bezel was creating a problem with the video cable.

Here's another:

I encountered the same issue. The laptop had fallen from a table approximately 2-feet above the floor. Upon subsequently attempting to start the N5110 Dell laptop, I saw a white screen and heard 8 beeps. The screen did not change from all-white, and the beeps would resume approximately every 15-seconds.

My solution was to open the computer so that I could see the motherboard. Watch any of a number of videos on youtube for guidance if you are unfamiliar with the technique for properly disassembling and reassembling the N5110 chassis. I removed the CMOS battery from its case on the left-front of the motherboard, After a minute I placed the same battery back into the socket. Taking care to reconnect the three electrical ribbons that run from the motherboard to the keyboard, the battery was replaced and the start button was pushed.

A boot notice appeared on the screen that the computer had been improperly shut-down, and I had the option of restoring to a previous point, or starting Windows normally. I selected the normal start, and after a longer than usual boot, the laptop returned to full functioning.

I don't know if the ol' CMOS battery trick will work in all instances of the dreaded 8-beep error, but pulling the battery and replacing it causes the system to perform a power reset. I wish you similar success should you encounter this issue.

And finally, an entire Dell Community tag dedicated to the N5110 White Screen 8 Beeps issue. This tag only has one post.

If you feel up to opening up your laptop the Dell Service Manual should provide you with enough information on how you can check the monitor cable.

My latitude keeps emitting an annoying sound. What I tried is super quick fix and worked for me. Here's how.

  1. Go dollar store and get an ear-phone (I got a mono-ear-bud )
  2. Plug it into ear phone jack on Latitude
  3. Beep stops (not during boot up but after the boot)
  4. Ear buds still emit annoying beep, so just cut off the bud (all you need is just a plug )
  5. Beep goes away!!

Looks as a default, Latitude mutes every sounds if it was plugged a ear phone in its connector. You can still use audio if you have USB audio system (USB doesn't have annoying beep.)
