Dell laptops have issues with the power regulation chip. What you need to do is pull the back cover off and unplug both the main battery and the CMOS battery. You need to be very very careful removing the CMOS battery. Do not pull the battery out by the wires. I find it’s best to use a plastic pry tool of some form, whether it be a spudger, old credit card or some other thin semi-semi blunt plastic tool. If you rock the two sides back and forth then push out the connector down the center, it will come out. The CMOS battery looks like this: https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/rWTpWLLvSdZ36TQU.large Once you have both batteries unplugged, hold the power button for 60 seconds. Yes, really, 60 seconds. Plug both batteries back in and plug in the charger, then attempt to turn the laptop on. If all went well, the CPU fan should spin over a few times before the machine finally boots back up. I don't even see any lights on. Typically something lights up to acknowledge power is coming in. Could be charging port. Could be battery. Could be board.

After enabling the external USB ports in the UEFI setup menu, my laptop fails to boot. Pressing the power button results in the button light turning on for (pretty much exactly) 5 seconds, and when on battery power, one of the five battery LEDs briefly flashes orange. There is no display, fan or keyboard activity. The exact same behaviour occurs when starting the laptop in emergency BIOS recovery mode (inserting the AC adapter while pressing the End key), except that the power button light blinks (again, for five seconds).
I’ve tried clearing the NVRAM by removing all power sources and draining flea charge, and also removing the RAM, SSD and WiFi cards. The RTC battery was dead, but replacing it did not help.
Three questions:

I suspect that the cause is a fried power supply circuit. Does this seem plausible, given the above information?

Are there any other troubleshooting steps I should try? Here is the motherboard schematic, if that is of any use. I have access to an oscilloscope, but my electronics knowledge is elementary at best.

As a last-ditch effort, I’m thinking of trying to reflash the BIOS in emergency flash mode. However, I’m unable to extract the .hdr and .rom files from the A08 Windows executable (“Error: Unable to load driver). Would one of you be able to extract the files and PM them to me?

The reset procedure actually is to disconnect the battery and the adapter. Then press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Then reconnect everything and try to reboot. Run a diagnostic procedure by tapping F12 immediately at boot. If it runs properly watch for any errors. That flashing amber light means a low battery charge. It is possible that the battery needs to be replaced or that the adapter is not charging the battery properly. If the adapter light stays on then a short is not likely. If possible try another Dell adapter. It is also possible that the DC jack is having problems and needs to be replaced. Least likely cause, the MB charging circuit is not working.

Ok, just tried it and still nothing. I can't get it to power on. All I get it the little power light up at the top by the battery life light. Nothing happens. Does that mean that I need a new system board?

September 14, 2021 - Its probably static. It'll eventually start up ... Mine likes to do that after going to sleep. I generally have to force shutdown, let the power cycle out, press it again, and boots no problem.

Don’t know what else to do. I disassembled this laptop twice to see what the issue was and now it’s stuck on the startup screen. When it wasn’t stuck, the keyboard and touch pad didn’t work, neither did the light indicator.

First, try an RTC Reset. Press and hold the power button until the computer turns off. With the AC Adapter connected, using a timer, press and HOLD the power button for 30 seconds. (The Power button LED should also flash twice when the reset starts) This should initiate a reset of the BIOS and power rails. The process takes two to three minutes and the system restarts about three times. If the system still hangs on the Dell Splash screen, then move on to the next steps. Again from a power off state with AC Adapter connected press the power button and SLOWLY tap the F12 immediately after power on (before you see anything on the screen) and see if you can get the one-time boot menu on the LCD. (waiting until you see something on the screen may be too late) If you can get into the F12 screen, run diags If diags pass, see if you can access the BIOS and reset BIOS defaults. If no change, remove the boot SSD, then try to access the F12 screen again and boot to a bootable USB flash drive. If none of these make any changes, then the system will likely need service. If you can boot to USB media only with the SSD removed, the SSD may be faulty \#Iwork4Dell

My works dell vostro 3888 desktop won’t power on. My lil green light turns on for 3ish seconds and immediately goes dark.
I replaced the psu and RAM with ones I know work from a same model computer. Still same issue.
Please help, if I fix it work will let me keep it

If you disconnect all internal power cables then plug in the power cable to the PSU the LED should turn on then turn off. That indicates the PSU is good. It sounds like a motherboard issue to me. Remove all RAM and expansion cards and see if the system powers on and gives a power button LED code. Did you solve the issue? If so, how? I'm currently facing this exact problem. PSU green light turns on for 3 seconds upon connecting the power cable. But the PC does not power on. Ethernet cable lights up when connected though.

Disconnected usb peripherals before testing.
Worked fine for the last year (bought in 2025)
Added an 1To SSD last month and use it to dual boot with Linux.

Sometimes it happens when you have a dead battery. Try disconnecting the battery and connecting the laptop with power and turn it on. Had a laptop like that for a while. Everytime I plugged the battery it died. Replaced the battery and happened again a few years after when battery was dying again.

that usually means the laptop is getting power but failing post. try holding the power button for 30 seconds with the charger unplugged to drain residual charge. then plug the charger back in and try again. if that doesn't work, remove the battery if it's removable and try booting on just ac power. sometimes a stuck ram stick causes this - reseating the ram modules helps a lot. you can also connect an external monitor to rule out a dead screen. lmk if none of that works, there are a few other things to check.
