Advice on buying a new Dell latitude laptop :)
I'll break it down in the way I know it (correct me if I'm wrong everybody) Quick disclaimer: Dell's Latitude naming scheme has changed quite a bit over the years, this list is only for their lineup from Ice Lake/Comet Lake (10th gen Intel) and onwards. First digit: The product "tier" in Dell's hierarchy 3: Cheapest model, worst build quality (I have no experience with these). 5: Tier above 3. Better keyboards, build quality, and generally more expansive hardware options. 7: Best build quality, thinnest of the bunch, and generally have the most hardware options, though they usually have soldered RAM and cannot be upgraded as easily. Second digit: the screen size. I only know of 2 numbers within the current Latitude lineup 4: 14 inch screen 5: 15 inch screen Third digit: the processor generation (I'm only talking about Intel Latitudes here as those make up the majority of Latitudes 1: 10th gen Intel Core (either Ice Lake or Comet Lake. Avoid Comet Lake, they're 14nm and generally far less efficient than Ice Lake) 2: 11th gen Intel Core (Tiger Lake. The oldest I'd personally buy) 3: 12th gen Intel Core (Alder Lake. Avoid the -P series (for example the i7-1280P), they're hot, loud, and aren't good) 4: 13th gen Intel Core (Raptor Lake. Again, avoid -P series) 5: Core Ultra Series 1 (Meteor Lake. The naming is stupid, and don't be duped into buying a rebranded last-generation CPU in your laptop. Always look for the "ultra" if that's what you are looking for) Fourth digit: I haven't seen this one used since 12th gen, they're all -0 laptops now, but good to be aware of if you're shopping for 10th, 11th, or 12th gen Intel models. 0: Regular, lower-power CPU. For example, the 5520 has a low-power Tiger Lake-U chip. 1: Higher power (usually 45W) CPU. For example, the 5521 uses a higher power Tiger Lake-H chip. 5: There's only 1 gen so far with a 5 as the last digit, and that's the one that uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus chips. Avoid these generally. As for what model to buy, it depends heavily on how much you're willing to spend. Things range from around $200 for some 3410 models, all the way up to the new models, which carry price tags that far outweigh their value. I'm serious. Do not buy a Latitude new from Dell. They are bad deals for the laptop that you get. The used models tend to be okay though. More on reddit.com

Dell Latitude Pros/Cons?
I owned one and used it briefly before going back to the M4800 of ye olden times due to port availability. Still works to this day for a family member* Advantages depend on whether or not you are getting the aluminum or carbon fibre model. The aluminum laptop is the one I owned and I chose it because it looks nicer and is far less of a fingerprint magnet than the alternative. My only issue is that it does get hot (doesn't fail an ouchie test, but it's noticeable) under heavy usage and the tiny fan won't be able to keep up with it (admittedly, Mortal Kombat 9 was a bit much for gaming without a gpu, lol, but also any heavy cpu usage) Both sockets of RAM are upgradable, up to 32gb, and are easily accessible the moment you remove the back plate. The SSD is much the same, and comes via NVMe (that's fast btw). I've found that the battery is usually enough to get me through a workday, assuming web browsing and some video watching. Multi-tasking and all that jazz. The keyboard can be replaced, albeit you'd have to remove the board to access it. Most other models and brands rivet it to the front palmrest. Depending on the one you get, you might be able to get a 1920x1080 panel which still looks nice to this day. It won't win any awards, mind you, but it's better than some 1366x768 thinkpad screens around the same time span (eww) Later on in my ownership, I did drop water right on it while working late one night. It survived after a thorough drying and cleansing to this day with no problems. One of few laptops that I've seen survive outright, but intervention was fast and I knew what to do unlike customer computers that usually come in for repair lol. Overall, it's premium and I'd recommend it. The only thing I have to complain about is the tiny fan, but I almost never hear it unless I push it through its paces. More on reddit.com

r/Dell on Reddit: Advice on buying a new Dell latitude laptop :)
January 1, 2025 -

TDLR: Help choosing between different models of the latitude range.

As a long standing user of Dell latitude laptops (I've had my latitude E7250 since 2014), it is time for me to upgrade to a newer laptop. I'm astonished it lasted this long, and I'm currently using it to write this post. The laptop albeit has issues with processing speeds now due to its age, but because of this longevity I want to stay with the latitude range. Using the format I found in this forum, I will list what I need help with and what I will use the laptop for:

  1. I wish to purchase a new latitude laptop, but with all these different models of it, I am quite stuck on choosing and would be grateful for any help. As the laptop I have currently runs on intel i7, I will only be going for that as well.

  2. I use this laptop for word processing ( I do a lot of writing), internet browsing, and very occasional gaming. What I like most is the lightness and small size of these laptops, making them easy to transport.

  3. I am located in London, England. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Even just some clarification on the different models such as the 7450 vs the 5550 etc.

Thanks!

If you’re open to buying a refurbished laptop from eBay, I’d recommend looking at the Latitude 5400 or 7400 with an 8th Gen Intel i7 processor. Both are solid options, and I’ve had great experiences with them. In fact, I’m currently using a Latitude 7400 to type this response. All of these models come with a 14" display (the second digit represent the screen size of the model), which I find to be a great balance between portability and usability. They’re lightweight and easy to carry around, which sounds like something you’d value given your current Latitude experience. The main difference between the 5000 and 7000 series lies in the materials and build quality. The 7000 series is designed with higher-end, business-class materials, which give it a more premium feel. Both models are reliable, but the 7000 series offers a bit of an edge in terms of durability and aesthetics. For context, I work in the U.S. government and have used the Latitude 5400 (with an i7 processor) and recently upgraded to the 5450 (Ultra i7). While I appreciate the upgrades in the newer models, I personally prefer the older design with physical buttons next to the trackpad—it’s a nice feature for productivity.
