Unless you already have a NAS that is often a starting place. However, that box only has room for a single 3.5 inch drive. Getting two in there will require some creative mods that are probably non trivial. You could go with two 2.5 inch SSDs though. Is the SSD a 2.5 drive or a M.2 as I'm pretty sure it supports M.2 NVMe. I load Proxmox and go from there. A simple fist thing could be PiHole. You can do that with your system just the way it is. I wouldn't load windows at all, but it is a path if you are more familiar with it. There is a lot to learn. That system will support a lot of stuff, but at some point you will need more RAM and storage to reach it's full potential. I have a similar box that I added 32gb of ram and 3 sata drives. I'm running stuff like paperless-ngx, nextcloud, jellyfin, and more. Take a look a r/selfhosted for more ideas. There is a lot of overlap but r/homelab is more hardware orientied. So I have no idea what I'm doing with computers, but I like to game and this sounds like a potentially good opportunity. I have a few questions and I hope y'all might help.=) (Feel free to laugh at my cluelessness.)

What sort of options would I have for graphics cards for an OptiPlex 7050 SFF without changing any parts? (And how tough is that to do...? I've heard it feels like plugging in a USB.)

What sort of games might this thing be able to handle post graphics card upgrade?

Will it be capable of Windows 11 when 10 no longer gets support?

(If you saw my previous post about a 7040 I apologize. I've not purchased one yet and I was looking at 2 on Amazon. The 7050 looks like the better option to me?)

For graphics cards you're looking at low profile cards that are low power, meaning they get power from the PCIE port rather than needing a cord from the PSU. Some popular options are the yetson rtx 3050 low profile or the AMD rx 6400 low profile. When it comes to installing a card like this, you'll have to remove the slot cover on the backplate first, then the GPU should just slide right into place. Then you'll need to make sure the display is connected to the GPU, rather than the motherboard. It's also a good idea to install the latest driver for the GPU from the manufacturers website. With a low power GPU like this, you can expect to be able to play MOST games, though many newer games will require you to lower display settings. If there's a particular game you're interested in, just go to YouTube and search the games name + the GPU name. For example search "GTA V RTX 3050" chances are someone has already done a review of that card with that game and they can give you optimal settings for it. As far as windows is concerned, right now windows 11 is not compatible with the 7050 models because the cpu's are pre-8th gen. Whether or not microsoft will add support for those cpu's later I don't know, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think there are ways to get around it and get windows 11 installed but it involves some tweaking in the bios and a few other things. It's not a beginners task, and it may come with other issues down the line if you're able to get it done. If you want to be 100% sure of windows 11 compatibility you'll have to get a 7070 with 8th gen Intel or higher. The GPU options are the same for that model BTW.

I have to say that if you are starting from scratch and the goal is to build a budget gaming PC, then starting with a used Optiplex - particularly an SFF - is a low benefit approach. My daily driver is a 9020 MT. While I enjoy the challenge of building and using a sleeper gaming PC, I now realize I could have spent the same money overall and built a more capable, quieter, and upgradable PC with used parts that are not Dell proprietary. Ebay and other platforms are full of cases, mobos, GPUs, etc that will work together for a cheap gaming machine. Building and using a sleeper optiplex is a unique reward but also often frustrating. Be honest with yourself about your PC goals and only go the optiplex route if you're really into the aesthetic.

As much as I dislike windows and would advocate for anyone to use it if they can, I'm going to play devils advocate for it because it might just be easier for you to stick with windows unless you are having issues or have a specific reason to want to use Linux. Your CPU is likely being used by windows to run various background tasks that happen on a new windows install. It can take a few hours/days for this all to figure itself out. Your RAM is likely being cached and not actually used up (although windows does definitely use more ram than almost any Linux setup) but I wouldn't be concerned about this unless your computer actually starts to feel slow. Make sure you disable startup programs you don't need and maybe take a look at Chris Titus Tech's windows debloat tool (use with caution, make sure you understand what it does). That said, if you want to run Linux on it, I don't think you'd see any downsides unless you are heavily reliant on windows-only software such as the desktop versions of Microsoft office (specifically the functionality that isn't there in the online versions or libreoffice), stuff like the Adobe cc suite, games with anticheat like Fortnite, etc. I would recommend trying out, say, Linux mint in a virtual machine (virtualbox program) before going all in. If you don't like it, try Ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora, etc until you find something that you like. Read up on them and watch some videos about them if you haven't already. If you decide to take the plunge, make sure to backup all your important files and take note of where to download Dell's drivers and windows utilities should you decide to reinstall windows. I hope you enjoy using Linux if you decide to switch :)

I just purchased an Optiplex 7050 off ebay and it's the slowest machine I've ever encountered. It came with Windows 11 installed and when powered up, it takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes before I can do anything on it. Disk Manager shows the hard drive is at 100% capacity from initial bootup and any time I do anything with it (open a browser, downloads, etc.). I don't have anything installed on it other than Photoshop and a browser (LibreWolf). Unfortunately, it's not an ssd hard drive. I'm wondering whether I should buy a new SSD drive for it, or am I just throwing more good money after bad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

r/HomeServer on Reddit: Dell Optiplex 7050 Homeserver Build โ€“ Jellyfin, arr Stack, immich, and Future Expansion
September 3, 2024 -

Hey everyone,

I recently snagged a Dell Optiplex 7050 for cheap on eBay and decided to turn it into a homeserver for media management and personal use. I wanted to share my setup, get some feedback, and maybe hear some of your experiences with similar builds!

Current Setup:

  • Dell Optiplex 7050

    • Intel i5 (7th gen)

    • 8GB RAM (want to upgrade to 32GB)

    • 1TB NVMe SSD (to run proxmox with docker containers)

Apps & Services:

  • Jellyfin: Planning to use this for media streaming. Watching more series than movies, don't need to keep content after watching it.

  • arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.): To automate media downloads.

  • immich: For personal photo/video management (starting to move off Google Photos and iCloud).

Storage:

  • 1TB NVMe SSD

  • Adding a 4TB 3.5" HDD soon: I plan to use this for my media library (movies, TV shows, music). My current Google Photos library has about 160GB, and my partnerโ€™s iCloud library has around 220GB, so combined weโ€™ll be migrating around 380GB just for photos.

  • External Backup HDD: Will use an external HDD for backups, probably starting with a 4TB or 8TB drive to be safe.

Future Expansion: Iโ€™m already thinking ahead about storage growth. Down the line, Iโ€™ll likely get a DAS with more storage and parity to protect the data. This will give me flexibility to expand without too much hassle.

Questions:

  1. Anyone using a similar setup for Jellyfin? How much space do you find you need for a 1080p/4K media library?

  2. Is the 4TB drive a good starting point for the media side and photo storage, or should I plan bigger right away?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Looking forward to seeing where this build takes me.

Hello everyone I hope all is having a great day. I am not the smartest when it comes to computers so I've came here to ask a couple of questions. So at the moment I have a optiplex 7050, core i5 7600, 16gb ram, 300w power supply, 500gb with a RX550. And I've been playing apex, GTA, rainbow, and Fortnite all working pretty well at low-medium setting. My question is I have a budget of $120 to upgrade and I want to achieve at lease 60-70 fps with GTA- apex with medium settings, what would be the best purchase to make? Like maybe a new graphics card? And if so which one would be best for my computer. And what would be good purchases for the future without a budget?

So this is a small form factor, this limits your options of GPU to low profiles, $115 for a 7th gen optiplex isn't bad. Since it's a optiplex, know that dell uses their own proprietary hardwares. The Motherboard, and the power supply being examples of such. For GPU I recommend any single slot ones. current popular choices are the low profile gtx 1650, the RX 6400 and the intel arc A310

It's not a bad price for a 7050 with an i7, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. All you need to add is a GPU, and realistically, any slot powered card would be great in this system. Just depends on your budget for the GPU. People will tell you that you're stuck with single slot cards, and that's not true. They'll suggest the A310, which is a bad idea because the Intel Arc cards are really designed around Resizable BAR, which you can't enable on these systems and there is a decent performance loss on a card that's already not very performant to begin with. The RX 6400/6500 are other suggestions that people make, but they can be problematic in a Gen3 slot due to a lot of corners that were cut in the design of those GPU's. For dual slot cards, the GTX 1650 is a good option at the entry level... IF prices have come down. Last I looked at those, they often sold for near $180, which makes zero sense. They should be selling closer to $100. My suggestion is the 3050 6GB for about $170. Now, this means you would have to use the x4 slot next to the CPU which will result in about a 11% performance loss. Even with that performance loss, it will be a better experience than the RX 6400/6500 and you won't have to worry about the frame pacing issue that can crop up with those two.

I recently bought a Dell 7050. It came with only 16gb of memory. I upgraded the graphics card to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6gb. Then I removed the factory memory and installed 2 sticks of OLOy ddr4 16gb 3200 memory. I have 2 extra RipJAWZ DDR4 3200 8GB that I could use if it wouldn't cause an issue. But the question is. Do I need to change a setting so it will speed up the memory to the 3200 instead of the 2400 that came in the system. I know a little about computers, just enough to be dangerous. And can I use the extra sticks of 8gb since they are all 3200? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, like in the title, I'm trying to turn this office prebuilt into something that can run Satisfactory on low, DRG on at least medium, stuff like that

Biggest hurdle I met so far (and what caused me to post in the first place) is lack of GPU, and small PSU (just 240 Watts). The PSU severely limits what I can install in it, and so I am looking for advice - maybe some of you modded an office pc like that.

I am in Poland, so its EU market, and my budget would be around 1k pln, or about 200ยฃ, but I can go higher if it makes sense.

Currently it has 16 Gb of RAM, I think its DDR4. CPU is intel i7 of the 7th generation (it has 8 cores, but I dont remember the exact model number). PSU is 240W bronze, and I saw that I could buy a 300W PSU that would fit the case for about 1/4th of my budget, but maybe you know of a better option.

Any ideas?

Hi Buildapc community, I inherited a few PCs through work and one of them happens to be this great Optiplex 7050 Small Form Factor with an i7-7700 CPU and 16gb of Ram and a 250gb SSD.

What changes do I need to make (can I make) to this system to enjoy demanding modern gaming @1080p?

One of the PCs I inherited had an AMD FirePro W4100 which I removed and placed in the Optiplex 7050 temporarily until I better understand how to make this set up better.

I am hoping I can make changes without spending too much!

Thanks all!
