Hey everyone, I'm thinking about buying a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 7050 Micro with an Intel i5 6th Gen, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD for $150.
I plan to use it mainly for YouTube, web browsing, and light everyday tasks. My main concern is whether I might run into any issues in the future, like Windows 11 compatibility or similar limitations.
Thanks in advance for your help!
So I have no idea what I'm doing with computers, but I like to game and this sounds like a potentially good opportunity. I have a few questions and I hope y'all might help.=) (Feel free to laugh at my cluelessness.)
What sort of options would I have for graphics cards for an OptiPlex 7050 SFF without changing any parts? (And how tough is that to do...? I've heard it feels like plugging in a USB.)
What sort of games might this thing be able to handle post graphics card upgrade?
Will it be capable of Windows 11 when 10 no longer gets support?
(If you saw my previous post about a 7040 I apologize. I've not purchased one yet and I was looking at 2 on Amazon. The 7050 looks like the better option to me?)

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this hobby. As I was doing some research, I impulsively snagged a Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF for $110. Now that I have it, I don't know what to should do with it. Do you guys have any ideas or tips for this machine for a first time home lab?
Here are the specs. i7 6700k 1 TB SSD 8 GB DDR4 RAM
Im not a super techy person. The extent of my tech knowledge is DMR Radio services and programing radios like that, I would consider my windows knowledge moderate... I can make some tweeks here and there and do simple tasks in powershell with help from google of course. Am I in over my head for linux or should I just jump in and learn as I go?
I just purchased an Optiplex 7050 off ebay and it's the slowest machine I've ever encountered. It came with Windows 11 installed and when powered up, it takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes before I can do anything on it. Disk Manager shows the hard drive is at 100% capacity from initial bootup and any time I do anything with it (open a browser, downloads, etc.). I don't have anything installed on it other than Photoshop and a browser (LibreWolf). Unfortunately, it's not an ssd hard drive. I'm wondering whether I should buy a new SSD drive for it, or am I just throwing more good money after bad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Dell OptiPlex 7050 mini PC. Specs are as follows:
โข Intel Core i5-7500T Processor (4 cores, 4 threads)
โข 8GB RAM
โข 128GB SSD
โข 500GB HDD
โข Intel WiFi and Bluetooth with Antenna
โข Windows 11 Pro (Licensed)
โข Dell 65W Original Adapter
Is this PC upgradable? if yes, what specs to look for? And Monitor Suggestions? I would like to use it for Day to Day Heavy Office Work , which would include handling PDFs, Excels , Some Video Calling and Occasional Media Consumption. Can anyone suggest What to go for?
Hey everyone,
I recently snagged a Dell Optiplex 7050 for cheap on eBay and decided to turn it into a homeserver for media management and personal use. I wanted to share my setup, get some feedback, and maybe hear some of your experiences with similar builds!
Current Setup:
Dell Optiplex 7050
Intel i5 (7th gen)
8GB RAM (want to upgrade to 32GB)
1TB NVMe SSD (to run proxmox with docker containers)
Apps & Services:
Jellyfin: Planning to use this for media streaming. Watching more series than movies, don't need to keep content after watching it.
arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.): To automate media downloads.
immich: For personal photo/video management (starting to move off Google Photos and iCloud).
Storage:
1TB NVMe SSD
Adding a 4TB 3.5" HDD soon: I plan to use this for my media library (movies, TV shows, music). My current Google Photos library has about 160GB, and my partnerโs iCloud library has around 220GB, so combined weโll be migrating around 380GB just for photos.
External Backup HDD: Will use an external HDD for backups, probably starting with a 4TB or 8TB drive to be safe.
Future Expansion: Iโm already thinking ahead about storage growth. Down the line, Iโll likely get a DAS with more storage and parity to protect the data. This will give me flexibility to expand without too much hassle.
Questions:
Anyone using a similar setup for Jellyfin? How much space do you find you need for a 1080p/4K media library?
Is the 4TB drive a good starting point for the media side and photo storage, or should I plan bigger right away?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Looking forward to seeing where this build takes me.
Hello everyone I hope all is having a great day. I am not the smartest when it comes to computers so I've came here to ask a couple of questions. So at the moment I have a optiplex 7050, core i5 7600, 16gb ram, 300w power supply, 500gb with a RX550. And I've been playing apex, GTA, rainbow, and Fortnite all working pretty well at low-medium setting. My question is I have a budget of $120 to upgrade and I want to achieve at lease 60-70 fps with GTA- apex with medium settings, what would be the best purchase to make? Like maybe a new graphics card? And if so which one would be best for my computer. And what would be good purchases for the future without a budget?
Did I get a good deal? And also should I put in a graphics card and if yes, which one and is there anything else I should know?

I recently bought a Dell 7050. It came with only 16gb of memory. I upgraded the graphics card to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6gb. Then I removed the factory memory and installed 2 sticks of OLOy ddr4 16gb 3200 memory. I have 2 extra RipJAWZ DDR4 3200 8GB that I could use if it wouldn't cause an issue. But the question is. Do I need to change a setting so it will speed up the memory to the 3200 instead of the 2400 that came in the system. I know a little about computers, just enough to be dangerous. And can I use the extra sticks of 8gb since they are all 3200? Any help will be appreciated.
Need some affordable ideas, bought a optiplex on Facebook market and Iโm looking for some compatible components for a little gaming build, I know I have to chance out the power supply to be able to run any decent graphics cards, just curious if anyone knows what a good build would be
with the mini-tower, your good to go for some full size graphics cards. I have a 7060MT with a full size GTX1070 in it. You can check it out here https://www.reddit.com/r/SleepingOptiplex/comments/10l8cfl/full_size_gtx_1070_gpu_into_a_dell_optiplex_7060/ While I did eventually swap out the 240 watt psu for the larger dell 360 watt one, it actually ran fine on the original one using the SATA to 8 pin power adapter. I personal think the dell psu's are under rated. Other than that, boost your memory to at least 16gb and add in a 1 TB SSD and it makes a pretty good starter gamer.

Hi, like in the title, I'm trying to turn this office prebuilt into something that can run Satisfactory on low, DRG on at least medium, stuff like that
Biggest hurdle I met so far (and what caused me to post in the first place) is lack of GPU, and small PSU (just 240 Watts). The PSU severely limits what I can install in it, and so I am looking for advice - maybe some of you modded an office pc like that.
I am in Poland, so its EU market, and my budget would be around 1k pln, or about 200ยฃ, but I can go higher if it makes sense.
Currently it has 16 Gb of RAM, I think its DDR4. CPU is intel i7 of the 7th generation (it has 8 cores, but I dont remember the exact model number). PSU is 240W bronze, and I saw that I could buy a 300W PSU that would fit the case for about 1/4th of my budget, but maybe you know of a better option.
Any ideas?
I bought a dell optiplex 7050 SFF from a salvage spot. No harddrive or ssd. I am very new to all of this but thought maybe this is a shot at building a machine to get some LLM usage from on my local network. [Question] What makes sense to add into this machine to make it viable or did I buy a 35$ junker ? Is there a way to use this for any sort of AI/ML type rig that makes more sense than my 8GB ram Mac book pro from 2015?
I5 7600 3.5ghz
Well. It's not compatible with Windows 11 so you have about 16 months of Windows 10 updates left.
You can force Windows 11 on it but I don't recommend it.
I salvaged a similarity speced Optiplex for free and I installed Debian on it. Runs pretty well for what it is.
Looking for relatively cheap graphics cards that will fit in my 7050

Hi Buildapc community, I inherited a few PCs through work and one of them happens to be this great Optiplex 7050 Small Form Factor with an i7-7700 CPU and 16gb of Ram and a 250gb SSD.
What changes do I need to make (can I make) to this system to enjoy demanding modern gaming @1080p?
One of the PCs I inherited had an AMD FirePro W4100 which I removed and placed in the Optiplex 7050 temporarily until I better understand how to make this set up better.
I am hoping I can make changes without spending too much!
Thanks all!

I was wondering if anyone would know any cases I could swap this with? Iโm pretty sure it has a LGA 1151 motherboard in it but I would like to have more space for a bigger power supply and a better graphics card than my Radeon RX 6400.
