Your Dell laptop is showing a diagnostic blink code: 3 amber flashes followed by 5 white flashes, repeating in a loop. This code means the system failed to complete its startup self-check (POST). Depending on your model, the most common causes are: Memory (RAM) not detected or seated improperly - most common cause CMOS battery / Real-Time Clock (RTC) power loss Corrupted BIOS firmware Power rail or motherboard fault - less common The good news: most users can fix this at home in under 30 minutes. Follow the steps in order and stop as soon as your laptop boots. Before You Open the Laptop Work on a hard, non-static surface Touch metal first to discharge static Have a small Phillips screwdriver ready Refer to your model's service manual at dell.com/support 1. Hard Reset  Clears residual power — fixes many cases instantly. Unplug adapter, remove battery (if removable) Hold power button for 30 seconds Reconnect power and try booting 2. Reseat the RAM - Most Common Fix  Unscrew the memory access panel on the bottom Push the side clips outward — RAM stick pops up Firmly press it back in until clips snap Two sticks? Test each one alone to find a bad module 3. Reset CMOS  Unplug everything (adapter, USBs, peripherals) Hold power button for 60 seconds Plug in and retry 4. BIOS Recovery  For corrupted firmware. Unplug the adapter Hold CTRL + Esc, then plug adapter back in Keep holding until the recovery screen appears → select Recover BIOS 5. Run Built-In Diagnostics  Power on → tap F12 repeatedly → select Diagnostics Next Steps If the issue persists after these steps, it may indicate a motherboard failure or a deeper power subsystem fault. We recommend contacting our support team for further assistance. You can use the Get Help Now chat feature located at the bottom right corner of this page. Or, you may reach out to a trusted technician for a hands-on diagnosis. Please see this video for general No Post Troubleshooting.

It is true that it's not documented, but historical posts have shown it to be a fault on one of the power rails on the system board - the only real solution is to replace the board.

Power off computer, remove battery, connect AC adapter, and then power on system again. Please observe any blinking lights. If the blinking lights are still there, power off the system again, remove AC adapter. Press and hold down the power button for 20 seconds to drain any excess static power. Replace battery, connect adapter, and then power on system. Hopefully, there aren't any flashing lights.

It’s possible that the battery has reached the end of its lifespan. Battery Report Check: Create a battery report to check the status of your current battery. Open a Command Prompt window (search for 'cmd' in the Start menu). Type the following command and press Enter: powercfg /batteryreport This will generate a battery report. Locate the report file (usually saved in your user folder) and open it. Compare the Design Capacity value with the Full Charge Capacity value. For a healthy battery, these values should be nearly the same. Battery Replacement: If the tests indicate that your battery is not reaching its full capacity, consider replacing it. Temporary fix/Workaround: Hard Reset Turn off the laptop. Disconnect  the AC adapter and remove the battery or simply remove the base cover and disconnect the battery cable. Disconnect all devices such as USB drives, printers, webcams, and media cards (SD/xD). Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to drain the residual power. Connect the AC adapter and battery. Turn on the computer. Please contact support by clicking the ‘Get Help Now’ button located at the bottom right corner of the page. The button is marked with a help icon for easy recognition as per the picture below:

May 5, 2024 -

I have a dell g5 5587, i changed the fans and keyboard by myself (not the first time i dissemble it), the laptop is 6 years old, when i was changing things i kept the cmos battery connected and disconnected everything else, after finishing things when i was trying to boot up the laptop to check everything it didnt bootup at all, at first i thought it might be a power up button problem but after checks it seemed like its not, I removed cmos battery and plugged in the laptop with charger it immediately turned on (only keyboard and led) and then led flashed me 3 orange and 1 white lights, i reseated the cmos battery and tried again, same problem, sometimes with cmos battery hooked the laptop doesnt make anything other than flashing once i plug it in with one white light but then i wont be able to boot it at all and power button doesnt turn it on, I tried removing cmos and holding the power button for 30 seconds and plug it again but it didnt work, I encountered the same problem before but I solved it with the 30 seconds thing, is there any thing i can do and is it a big problem or a small one (im hoping i just need to replace cmos battery) could it be a power button failure too ?

r/techsupport on Reddit: Power button on dell case starting flashing orange light, PC won’t boot
May 29, 2021 -

My 3 year old dell pre-built started powering down randomly, at first it would do it after a while of use, but it started to get more and more and more frequent. It eventually reached the point where it would spin up and then power off, and then finally it would do absolutely nothing no matter what I did.

I figured the power supply was the issue from prior experience so I went ahead and bought a new one. I replaced the old 400w that came with the computer with a nice 650w evga gold. However even after double and triple checking the connections all I get is a blinking orange light from the power button on the case. I guess either the motherboard is what went and not the psu, but that doesn't seem right judging from the initial issues. Or maybe the psu was doa? Not sure but if anyone has any idea how to continue trying to figure this out i'd appreciate any help I can get, thanks.

For example, the power status light blinks amber two times followed by a pause, and then blinks white three times followed by a pause. This 2,3 pattern continues until the computer is turned off indicating the Recovery image is not found.
