Specs will matter a lot. Precision 3591 is likely to come with an RTX AX000 or RTX A500 GPU. Those are officially supported GPUs for most engineering software. I work with AutoCad and I have a Precision with an A3000. It’s been incredible. I’d definitely shoot for the 3591 if I were you. In fact that’s what we spec or did since it’s discontinued, for our staff that requires a laptop. More on reddit.com

The professional RTX cards have "CAD certified" drivers, meaning NVidia and the software manufacturers test and tune them for professional software packages, while the "normal" drivers are more oriented for Gaming... Also, the cards are, while very similar, not the same... a good article about that is this one , although it focuses on desktop cards... The old rule of thumb is "you want fps, go GTX. You want CUDA, go Quadro/RTX". From what i hear from the CAD people, that still holds... On the other hand, in the Laptop environment, the differences are not that much, because of the limits defined by the form factor of the cards and the thermal limits in the laptop... Which is one reason real high-end setups on laptops are not really comparable to desktop workstation setups... So, there's no RTX 8000 with 48GB VRAM for the laptop... ;-) That said, Maya should work without a problem with the 5070 too... More on reddit.com

I’m planning on going into a double degree of Aerospace engineering and Astrophysics undergrad, and am in Year 10. I need a laptop for school as my old one, a really old dell that we’ve had since 2010, has broken down and is no longer usual. I want it to last at least 7 years, and able to withstand CAD software as well as coding and other programs, with a good battery life and display. The university campuses are huge. Would a Dell Precision 3591, with all of the basic specs (the 32GB RAM and 1T SSD to be specific) be worth it? (It’s 3400$ AUD)

Which one to choose? Is the older 3591 obsolete in conparison with brand new , but not yet proven Dell Pro Plus. I am no gamer, but 6GB is somewhere else then new Arc. I appreciate no fan noise during regular work and occasionaly some free time game time. Is it worth it wait for the new one?

A Dell Pro Plus is NOT the successor of a Precision 3591 that has also NOT a gaming card in it. The Dell Pro Plus is a 15W cpu only. Either Arrow Lake or Lunar Lake or even a dumb Raptorlake without any NPU capabilities. Even with the new Intel Arc cards you won’t get a gaming level performance. If you want a Precision from the next gen, just wait for the next gen, the Dell Pro Max series.
