I just bought a Dell Precision 5690, and cannot find a hardshell case for it online, style in the image below (but not necessarily orange!). Can anyone help? Can I use the case for an alternative model number, if so what is model number please? If not available, can you recommend something similar. UK based. your help appreciated.

r/Dell on Reddit: Anyone else had a comically bad experience with the newer Dell Precisions?
October 4, 2024 -

IT worker here. About a year or so ago my company decided to make the switch over to Dell Precisions for our workers who need higher-end machines. Previously we were using Alienwares(lol) and they had their issues, but they also worked pretty well. At worst they might run a little hot or the batteries would swell up. But only once or twice did we have to give someone a new laptop. But we decided they were kind of overkill for what we do here, so enter the Precision. We started buying whatever the newest models were about a year and half to two years ago. Ever since then we've had nothing but problems with them. These laptops are roughly $3000 a piece brand new straight from Dell. The most common issue we've seen is the motherboard malfunctions. People start to report their laptop freezes up, crashes, etc. All basic troubleshooting fails, and so it's off to Dell support. And yep, basically every time it's been a mobo replacement or an SSD replacement(shortly thereafter followed by a mobo replacement). This has happened with at least 10 of these laptops to date, different batches, newer models, etc. They all have a major malfunction at one point or another, they are ticking time bombs. I unfortunately get little to no say in what we use, otherwise we'd have moved on by now. Has anyone else had this experience? Are we just terribly unlucky?

r/Dell on Reddit: Precision 5690 - Questions on storage upgrade and GPU
August 23, 2024 -

Just picked up a 5690 off the outlet - Core7u 165, 32gb, 512gb nvme, 4090.

This thing is a brick of lead, dang it's dense - but it feels VERY solid. Anyways straight to the questions -

I purposely ordered this without any meaningful storage. It came with 512gb nvme because I knew it had 2 slots and was going to upgrade them anyways. I have a stack of NVME drives downstairs. The problem is the 990 PRO 2TB i'd like for my main NVME has that huge heatsink on it.

I have NOT opened the Precision clamshell yet, but i imagine how thick this thing is will be a problem. Does anyone know if it will fit? If not, does it have its own cooling solution (pad + heat pipe?).

Second question on the GPU - mine has a 4090. I cannot find how in the world to configure one of these with a 4090 on the site if I wanted a NEW one. Anyone know?

r/Dell on Reddit: Precision 5690 still worth it?
December 1, 2025 -

Hi all,

Just ordered a Precision 5690 through Dell Outlet, for ~$1700. It feel like quite the bargain (I think?) for such a system. Here are the specs:

  • Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 165H (16 Core, Up to 5.00GHz, 24MB Cache, 28W)

  • 512GB PCIe M.2 NVMe Gen 4 Class 40 SSD

  • Memory 32GB Memory (Onboard)

  • 16 inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) 60Hz 500-nits 100% sRGB ComfortView Plus Low Blue Light DCI-P3 Non-Touch Display

  • NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada Generation 8GB GDDR6

I'm a long time XPS user and I'll mainly use it for engineering/research work that's CPU heavy.

I know the model is a bit outdated - so do you guys think this is a good purchase? Should I look for alternatives (ie ThinkPad) or a newer Dell model?

I have read bad things about the new 16 Premium here so I chose the more established Precision, but now having second thoughts. Thanks in advance!

r/Dell on Reddit: Dell Precision 5690 now or wait til 2025 line of laptops?

Currently trying to find a very good business laptop mainly for work. I will only use the browser on the laptop since I will code via SSH. No heavy software will be used. Just the typical discord, browsers, etc.

Looking at the specs, everything looks incredible on the 5690. Haptic touchpad, good battery life. Abit concerned that the screen is only at 60hz refresh rate. But I believe the macbook air is also having the same refresh rate.

My question is, is it too late to get the laptop or should I wait for the next line of laptops? Potentially getting snapdragon chip?

r/Dell on Reddit: Is the Precision 5690 Quite Under Normal Load?
July 11, 2025 -

Hi

I need to choose from work a Precision 5690 with Intel 165H and RTX 3500 Ada, or a MacBook pro 16 M4 pro. Both have insane amount of ram.

I'm generally a not an Apple guy, and have some annoyances with Mac (what is that horrible window management?!).

I tend towards the Dell, but wondered if its able to run without the fans under normal load? Browsing the web, watching YouTube? My current laptop makes noise and warms up and I would prefer if it wasn't :) of course for more intensive work-related missions they will both heat up and turn on the fans.

I couldn't find any reviews addressing that.

Thanks:)

r/Dell on Reddit: Did I just break my new work computer? Precision 5680
September 24, 2024 -

Just got a brand new Precision 5680 from my employer. There was a little tab between the keyboard and screen that I thought was a thing that needed to be ripped out. You can see the remnants in the images. I ripped it out and now the computer won’t start. First the display went - I could still see my work on my second monitor. Now it won’t start at all. Coincidence or did I just damage something essential?

I purchased a Precision 5690 at the end of December for work and I have had nothing but problems.

Specs:

Intel Core Ultra 9 185H 2.50 GHz 32 GB RAM Windows 11 Pro Version 24H2

Highlights:

Built-in webcam continuously stops being recognized, seems MS Teams causes it to go offline. Only recourse has been to reinstall the camera driver multiple times.

System crashes led to sound failures.

After fighting with Dell for weeks, I was FINALLY issued a replacement device.

Now - the new machine is running slower than the 3+ year old underpowered Lenovo I was using before. Startup from sleep just doesn’t work about half the time, windows camera frame server shows multiple crashes a week, it’s so frustrating.

I’m not overclocking, not crypto mining, I’m literally using the machine to have video conferences for work - that’s the crux of the matter here.

This computer (now the 2nd machine) seems like an absolute joke - if it was a car it would be considered a lemon.

Anybody have any ideas of what I can do? Dell has someone coming to me tomorrow to replace the HD (again I’ve had this second machine for less than a month) but I doubt that will help anything.

I'm about to order a Dell Precision 5690 (core i7, RTX2000, 32GB ram, 2TB SSD). My only dilemma is which screen I'm going to get. The OLED touchscreen is a very expensive option. I like the touchscreen functionality but is it worth the extra 560€? Is the OLED screen much better quality then the regular screen? Anyone that has seen or worked with both?

I need a laptop for engineering university. I will mostly be doing programming and CAD work. Between the Precision 3000 and 5000 series with the specs in the photo, what should I choose? Or is there something else I should look at?
