We watch ebay for most of our shop test systems. We’ve grabbed a few 7810’s and 5810’s with way more memory than we’d ever need for a few hundred bucks. Sadly they lack NVMe but with a boss card they still perform quite well. Good enough for general purpose VM test rigs. Otherwise, 3620/3630 are relatively inexpensive as well and support one NVMe. I don’t recall if the 3650 has dual NVMe or not, 3660’s do but their the current model so you’ll pay a premium. More on reddit.com

Very few people want a big desktop computer anymore when laptops and iPads are just as good for 98% of what "normal" people need. Power users don't want out of date hardware at any price. Some of these servers can be quite loud and power hungry as well. So there's nothing wrong with them, but like any used PC, they hold value very poorly. The Xeon you describe is a 140W processor from 2017. Sure it was a beast then, but it is a very poor power to performance ratio for 2024. The CPUmark is 12658 multi and 2262 single core. A Core 3 100u beats both handily on 15W. More on reddit.com

the main reason to go with ryzen is that new parts or available. Also in a few years you can upgrade to ryzen 7 or even 9. Some people like to have new parts for "perceived reliability" in this case you'll be stuck with ryzen 5 power for the rest of your life. It depends. If it originally came with Windows (and hasn't had the motherboard replaced), it should still have the key embedded in BIOS. If it originally came with a different OS, it likely does not have a key embedded in BIOS. More on reddit.com

I'm looking for a solid machine that I can use for homelab, dual/triple booting operating systems, and running virtual machines.
I could of course build something from scratch but I think I could get much better value looking at older refurbished workstations. I'm not a big gamer but some of these systems include pro quadro cards anyway which would be more than adequate and better than most new budget graphics cards.
So far I think the Precision 5820 looks like a possible option and I've seen some for fairly cheap prices. It seems to be new enough that it has all the important features like support for M.2, USB 3.1, and ddr4. I really like the flex bay design that allows for four hot swap drives. Is the Linux support good? What is the repairability and noise like?
Are there any other models worth considering?

I got my Precision 5820 from this seller on https://ebay.us/Jpwgit eBay a few months ago, definitely one of the best value buys I’ve made. It runs multiple VMs like a champ, barely makes noise, and everything works great. Super easy to upgrade too. Just make sure to check seller ratings and look for units with lower power on hours. #ad
