December 17, 2023How to find the right tool to pull the stem (Delta shower faucet)
There isn't one. Delta shower cartridges are chunky, and half of it sticks out of the valve body as it is. You usually just need to wiggle it loose a bit, and pull. If it's more stuck, put a flathead screwdriver between the cartridge, and valve body, and twist a little to pop it out. Be mindful if your valve body is the old style, with the dreaded copper tubes in back--they can twist and leak very easily. The valve body is either solid all the way back (new style), or not. It's pretty simple to tell them apart. More on reddit.com

The replacement cartridges come with a plastic adaptor to help twist that stem in the valve body. Once you twist it and break it from its seized position you can probably pull and twist it out with some vise grips. That’s where I’d start. More on reddit.com

The delta 1300 and 1400 cartridges are always a huge pain to remove after any sediment builds up. I have misshaped the valve bodies before trying to get them out. They almost always separate and the back balancing spool it always the toughest to get out.
I ran across this slim gem puller. I’m all about having tools to make the job easier because it’s always about getting home at a decent time to have a life outside of work. I’m a huge fan of the Ona puller for Moen carts.
Anyone have experience with this puller? I’d just buy it and try it out if it were around $100 but at the $210 price point I’d be bummed to buy it and have it not be that great.

I don’t have proof of it but I can give you a story. Had a cartridge that was being a real pain and not coming free. Plastic was so beat up from all the different things we had tried, including using one of those hooks you can screw in, to leverage the thing out, while leaning full weight into it (sounds ridiculous, but I can tell you it didn’t work because it was pulling at everything behind it so it was dispersing the effect of the weight) Plastic was too new so chiseling it didn’t help much either. Being tired, we caved and ordered this tool. It worked flawlessly. It’s really very simple. You just screw it on and the inner piece is connected by screwing it into the front piece of plastic, and then the inner piece is pulled back by a piece of metal connected to the knob you unscrew on the back. It just gives you that bit of leverage that isn’t easy to get. Admittedly I used this thing about 20 minutes ago. It’s not an old story lmao. I know next to nothing about plumbing, and I’m sure that story makes me sound a bit like a moron, but without something to connect to the valve body it is really very difficult. Edit: bought the Wairool one as it arrived much sooner and this was an issue that needed to be fixed right now. I could also show you the cartridge and tool if you like.
