Why does Denver Colorado seem to have all the light rail going south and all the commuter rail going north? (not from the US i don't really know anything about the city)
It makes some sense at first blush: Denver is a lot more dense to the south than to the north (which is also much much newer development). So it seems reasonable that commuter focus would be to the north while more urban transit focus would be to the south. Except that’s not really what happened. The dense parts of the city are bypassed by the light rail for the most part, and it ends up being just as commuter focused as the heavy commuter rail, only a different technology. The truth of it is that the whole thing came about because the light rail went in when the system was focused on a mixed street downtown loop, while the more recent developments happened alongside the revitalized Union Station, with its heavy rail connections and infrastructure. Also trackage to the north is universally used by heavy rail, and it was cheaper to share space in several places, while the southern arms of the system were mostly newly acquired rights of way and all new track.
