I'm trying to change my farm into an Underground Desert to help my mate farm for the Desert Key.
The wiki states:
"It requires 1,500 blocks of sand to change the background into the desert background... If you want to create an Underground Desert, you additionally need sandstone or hardened sand walls behind the player."
I've tried this with both Sand and Sandstone in the bottom (at least 1500 blocks, it worked fine with Ice blocks for an Ice Biome), and I've put a bunch of Sandstone Walls all over.
Can someone tell me why this isn't working? (The Conveyor Belts get Actuated to make the spawning platform, if that's important)

Underground desert is a biome that can be augmented but not moved the natural background wall requirement is like the spider biome, only counts when the game placed it. https://terraria.fandom.com/wiki/Guide:Artificial_biomes#Underground_Desert The artificial sandstone walls added in 1.4.0.1 (created via Ecto Mist) do not allow the creation of an artificial biome. They behave like most player-created walls and prevent enemy spawning. However, it is possible to create natural-generated Sandstone Walls and Hardened Sand Walls via the use of the Clentaminator, in which Underground Desert enemies can spawn.

I tried to create an artificial desert biome because my desert is hallow now and i want to farm forbidden fragments. Wiki says it needs like 1500 sand blocks to change background. I placed well over 2000 in the surface sky like in the picture. what am i doing wrong :(

You can still farm forbidden fragments in a hallowed desert. You need to have 1500 in the biome detection radius, which is only a bit wider than the screen. My guess is you built too wide and not thick enough, so there’s not enough in the radius.

Desert keys need a full desert, while the desert mobs only require sand. If you're not getting the background, I'd guess you either don't have enough sand-type blocks (at least 1500 within a certain range) or you have a different biome overriding the background.

biome detection range is only 170x125 area centered around your character. desert biome only requires 1500+ sand/hardened sand/sandstone blocks within that range. desert mob spawns is an entirely different story. even more so with underground desert mobs that have unsafe backwall requirements. biome drops are only based on the biome/hybrid biomes your character is standing in. you dont need to kill biome specific enemies, any enemy that drops money will give biome drops. could farm biome keys by spamming king slimes or pirate invasions while your in the target biome.
