ELI5: The mentality of people who own mostly/all designer clothing.
I'm not into high fashion but I know some friends who are and it's basically just a hobby. They keep up to date on the latest fashions, designers, and companies much like a video game fan would keep up to date on the latest trends, developers, and publishers.
It's pretty interesting actually and there is an artistry to the whole thing and every little detail and design has been paid attention to by the designers and companies as well as the spectacle of designers trying to top each other with the shows. There's also a pretty healthy competition in that for the most part the designers and companies are flattered if they are copied by other companies.
It's just a thing people make a hobby out of that happens to make you look and feel nice.

50 Best Men’s Designer Brands Worth The Money in 2020
Excellent though the clothes are, calling Brunello Cuccinelli "worth the money" seems really wide of the mark.
More on reddit.comLuxury brands are totally worth it.
It varies. There's often a "in-name-only" tier where you are literally just paying for the brand name.
Also, with clothing especially, there's only so much that the material is worth. If you happen to find a cut that fits your body perfectly, good for you.
However, that same cut won't fit everyone, making it worth less if not worthless to other people. I know someone who only buys one particular cut of jeans from Old Navy because it's the only one that fits so well. Short of custom tailoring, and having ease of access to stores, it's the best option.
The other thing that can make luxury items a hard sell is the upkeep cost. This is probably most infamous in the case of supercars, where a tire change can be more expensive than your average "luxury" car. It's true of materials too, though. You may not have the time or money to maintain silk or cashmere, or it's expensive enough to weigh on your budget that you'd rather spend elsewhere.
