Consolation and Desolation - Ignatian Spirituality
March 17, 2017 - As we learn to recognize when we are in desolation and consolation, we can respond accordingly: changing course (through prayer, community, discernment, spiritual direction) when in desolation, and staying the course when in consolation.

Jesuit 101: Consolation and Desolation - The Jesuit Post
April 1, 2022 - As you can see above, consolation (and desolation, as we’ll see) is more than just a feeling or feelings. Rather, it is a state of being. This means that we shouldn’t expect any particular feeling whether we’re in consolation. Rather, it is a lens through which we are looking at the world—the lens of God’s love.

Consolation & Desolation – God In All Things
December 22, 2020 - When we understand this, we can say that consolation is when we feel our life fully connected with the context of the Principle and Foundation, when all seems oriented toward our purpose of loving God and neighbour. Desolation, on the other hand, is an unawareness or uncertainty of how our life fits within the context of the Principle and Foundation.

“Where y’at?!”: Consolation and Desolation - FOCUS Equip
June 16, 2025 - I know I am in desolation if I experience “darkness of soul, turmoil of spirit, an inclination to what is low and earthly, restlessness rising from many disturbances and temptations which lead to want of faith, want of hope, want of love… slothful, tepid, sad, and separated, as were, from its Creator” (#317). Note that these experiences are caused by outside forces greater than I am. And, note that most saints experienced BOTH consolation AND desolation.

Make sure to go to Confession, then return to Mass. After Confession, you could pray for people in need, such as those who read here, these below, or anyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIEBxw-P4LI https://fathersofmercy.com/fathers-of-mercy-examinations/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRQBaYfD1Go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2RVNCAGofo Pray for others https://www.stanthony.org/prayer/ https://frkapaun.org/kapauns-men/ https://www.catholicity.com/baltimore-catechism/

St. Ignatius' rules for discernment are really helpful for when we are in spiritual desolation. Here is a playlist with short and well explained talks about St. Ignatius' rules, and how to apply them by Fr. Gallagher. I would follow these rules. You will get out on the other side of the desolation safely with them. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqueiEKHoJeew_3p6vdkJ2WVXD_0qUQ3G You should listen to all the talks. One thing to keep in mind is that in desolation we should not change our routine, but stay the course. Rule 5: "In time of desolation we should never make any change, but remain firm and constant in the resolution and decision which guided us the day before the desolation, or in the decision to which we adhered in the preceding consolation. For just as in consolation the good spirit guides and counsels us, so in desolation the evil spirit guides and counsels. Following his counsels we can never find the way to a right decision." Fr. Gallagher does a great job explaining this and giving examples from the lives of the saints. I can't recommend his talks on this enough.
