The difference is in a dictionary, Annacdote. Note that there are differences between AE and BE. comforter and duvet ... I can't really find the difference. As the definition of duvet is "a quilt, often with a removable cover; comforter", they, to me, seem like synonyms. More on forum.wordreference.com

What is the difference between a comforter, duvet, blanket, quilt, bedspread, coverlet, etc, and what do you do with them?
Quilt: "sandwich" made of 2 layers of fabric, the top layer of which is often decoratively pieced from several fabrics, with something fluffy in between, held in place with stitching in decorative patterns. Typically goes only to the bottom of the mattress. Bedspread: Bedcovering that goes all the way to the floor, often with extra length at the top to cover the pillows. Can be quilted or jacquard woven or plain cloth with embroidery. Coverlet: like a bedspread, but about the size of a quilt. Typically jacquard woven. Comforter: Like a quilt, except made from two solid (not pieced) pieces of fabric, with thicker fluffy filling than a quilt, held in place with stitching here and there. Duvet: Like a comforter, except not decorative; often much fluffier than a comforter and filled with down or feathers. Not intended to be used alone, but inside a duvet cover, sort of like a giant pillowcase, which can be removed for laundering. Blanket: Single layer of fluffy woven material used for additional warmth. May have a decorative design but is not intended to be shown. More on reddit.com
What's the difference between duvet, bed comforter, bedspread, etc?
Comforter: Thickly filled blanket, doesn’t require a cover. Duvet: This is an insert, and requires a duvet cover which you purchase separately and usually comes with two matching shams. (The word is French for down but it can be filled with feathers, wool, silk, poly, etc.) Bedspread: A coverlet that isn’t as thick as a comforter or a duvet, but is long enough to drape over the sides of the mattress with overhang on at least 3 sides. Bed throw: Decorative blanket that is often seen folded at the foot of the bed, not big enough to cover the whole bed. Additionally you’ll need a sheet set (or a fitted sheet and pillow slips at a minimum), duvet cover if you decide on a duvet, and pillows. My personal preference is duvet with cover. You don’t have to wash the duvet itself as often (have it cleaned at the dry cleaner if it’s made of down!), only the cover. More on reddit.com

r/Bedding on Reddit: what’s the difference between a comforter, a quilt, and a duvet cover?
June 19, 2024 -
Hi, so i’ve never know the differences between a comforter, a quilt, and a duvet cover. I’ve always grown up sleeping in comforters. I’ve looked up the difference but it didn’t make sense in words so maybe someone can explain it better? lol I been wanting a new bed set and wondering which material is more cooling but also soft and not scratchy. I have felt a small baby quilt blanket at a craft fair before and it doesn’t seem very soft or malleable. I have sensory issues so finding a bedspread is annoying lol 😂

It sounds like you might be more interested in learning about the different kinds of weaving, thread counts, and fibers. Sateen, for instance, is a way to weave threads together and it feels very smooth compared to other ways of weaving the exact same threads. Some people claim they’re warmer, but I don’t notice it. Percale is the more typical weave for sleeping cool, then there are others like Jersey which make for soft but very warm sheets. For fibers I’m sure you know of silk and cotton, there’s a few types of cotton too where there are longer fibers and thus a generally stronger cotton. Linen is another to check out for sure, then of course there’s synthetics like polyester and rayon. A bunch of things try to say they’re bamboo or some shit, but iirc it’s really just rayon that happens to have been produced with bamboo. In my experience synthetics feel cool to the touch at first but the sleeping experience from the lower breathability and wicking makes synthetics the hottest sheets for their thickness. Silk is almost in the middle, smooth but natural and yet not as breathable. Once you have sheets that feel good, you might not care about what goes on top so much, but if you do I’d say your best bet might be with duvet covers since it is easier imo to find ones made of similar fabrics as the sheets.

Quilt vs. Duvet: Which To Choose
Duvet backs and fronts usually don’t have the same colorful, patchwork look to them that quilts have (though ours do). But the duvet itself usually comes tucked in a duvet cover, which may come in different colors or with designs stitched in it. But the real difference between duvets and quilts is the middle layer.

December 28, 2013 - They have a thin layer of insulation quilted between the outer (pieced) fabric cover layers and can provide additional warmth when needed but usually remain as decorative covers on the beds in the guest room. May 28, 2025 - The boho-chic cousin of comforters. Generally sporting patchwork designs, they can bring a vibrant, vintage touch to your decor. They are lightweight, perfect for spring and summer. You can use them as throws, table cloths, or even as superhero capes. No judgment here. But, remember, quilts love to be the center of attention.
