Length vs Size: Unraveling Commonly Confused Terms
July 11, 2023 - Size, on the other hand, is a multi-dimensional concept that takes into account the length, width, and height of an object. It can also refer to the overall magnitude or scale of something.

Size Matters - The Scale of Biology – Examples and Fun Facts
March 17, 2022 - From the diameter of DNA molecules (2 nanometers) to the height of an adult (1.75 meters), the length scale in biology is across 9 orders of magnitude! We discuss the size of biological molecules, bacteria, cells, etc.
Discussions

Is the length of all DNA molecules the same?
No. Humans have 46 different DNA molecules (in the form of chromosomes). They come in pairs. Some pairs are bigger than others. This is just with humans. Other species may have more or fewer chromosomes, and a bigger/smaller genetic code in general. More on reddit.com

"length" vs "size"
Both strlen and sizeof have been around for decades, so why do people not follow this "convention"? That's just the way it is, but there are more annoying cases of people not following convention. Initialization for example.. some people use direct attribute initialization (or C99 designated initializers), others always create an init function (i.e. constructor) for every struct, others use an inconsistent mixture of both. C just doesn't enforce anything. Could be much worse though . More on reddit.com

ELI5: Mass explanation: I’ve always been told that mass was not the same as weight, and that grams are the metric unit of mass. But grams are a measurement of weight, so am I stupid, was it was explained to me wrong, or is science just not make sense?
The difference is gravity. Weight is dependent on gravity while mass isn’t. So if you had a 5 kg object and you brought it to space, the weight would be 0 but the mass would be the same. Grams are a measure of mass, not weight. If you’re being pedantic, newtons would be the measure of weight in the metric system, but since the vast majority of us only have to deal with Earth’s gravity, we use mass and weight interchangeably. Size and Geometry Introduction - Bionumbers book
Some viruses infect bacteria whereas others infect mammalian cells, but the sizes of both groups of viruses are relatively similar, whereas the hosts differ in size by a characteristic volume ratio of 1000. This helps explain the fact that burst sizes from bacteria are about 100 whereas in the case of mammalian cells the characteristic burst size is ≈100,000. Throughout the chapter, we return to this basic theme of reflecting on the biological significance of the many length scales we consider.

March 31, 2016 - We are only beginning to understand these intricate connections between genetic and epigenetic information in the cell, integration of environmental information, and hormonal control of developmental timing. Size differences can be expressed in terms of rather simple one-dimensional measurements (e.g. length, height etc.).

r/biology on Reddit: Is the length of all DNA molecules the same?
August 21, 2019 - The length of all DNA molecules is certainly not the same. I work in a lab studying fungal pathogens and we regularly use the different sizes of DNA to separate the DNA of interest from the other DNA. Each organism has different lengths of DNA and many bacteria contain a second set of DNA called a plasmid.

The flagellar length control system: exploring the physical biology of organelle size - PMC
This link between IFT and length is a conserved feature of cilia and flagella in different organisms. In vertebrate cells, prostaglandin PGE2 signaling promotes IFT and leads to increased ciliary length, while impairment of PGE2 signaling, which reduces IFT, leads to shorter cilia (Jin 2014). Quantitative measurements of IFT trains moving from the base to the tip (anterograde trains) demonstrate that the size, frequency, and speed of the trains is a function of length, with longer flagella having smaller trains (in the sense of fewer IFT particles per train), arriving at the tip at a higher frequency, and with only a very slight dependence of speed on length (Engel 2009).

Sizes of Organisms - Explanation, Structure and FAQs
April 17, 2026 - Every living organism in this world consists of a structural and a functional unit of life, i.e., the cell. It plays a major role in performing all the metabolic activities required for the growth of the organisms. But these cells are different in sizes and shapes and vary from organisms to organisms. This difference creates a variation between all the organisms.

How cells measure length on subcellular scales - PMC - NIH
These different structures on different length scales, composed of different molecular building blocks, all show precise length control but employ radically different mechanisms to achieve it. In addition to directly controlling the size of a structure, linear elements of defined size can be used to set distances between other structures. Simple molecular spacers, in the form of coiled coil domains, are used to set the spacing between layers of the yeast spindle pole body (Kilmartin et al., 1993) and between the axial elements of the synaptonemal complex of meiotic chromosomes (Tung and Roeder, 1998).

Which Body Size Metrics Should Be Used for Assessing Temperature Impacts on Fish Growth and Size?
June 18, 2025 - For fish and other animals that continue growing throughout life, body size can be defined as size-at-maturity, adult size, asymptotic size, maximum observed size, population-averaged length or mass, or average size-at-(arbitrary)-age. These concepts of size are not equivalent, and temperature is likely to affect each in different ways. Some disagreement about temperature impacts on fish body sizes might relate to the different body size and growth metrics used, especially when combined with different biological scales (individual, population, or community) and empirical contexts (laboratory, field).
