Plants can be classified in many ways, but the broadest categorizations classify plants as one of two primary types of plants. There are two broad classifications with two categories: flowering plants and non-flowering plants, or vascular and nonvascular plants (which refers to whether the plant has developed a vascular system to transport water and minerals). Of course, there are thousands of variations within each category, so plants are often categorized in a more specific way such as their growth patterns, taxonomy, or other characteristics.

r/houseplants on Reddit: Show me DIFFERENT plants, please?
February 26, 2024 -

A combination of depression, moving and some other circumstances caused me to drastically minimize my collection, and also kind of lose interest - and all the while, I really need to get excited about things again.

I've been looking for new plants or plant-related things to get hyped about on Instagram, but everything looks kind of the same. Slightly different takes on "aroid + moss poll + varigation", or "very similar looking hoyas that I can't tell apart". Hell, even begonia accounts started looking a bit repetitive and uninspiring.

Show me something interesting, please? Either different kinds of plants, or even just a new cool/unusual way to present them.

Thank you!

r/botany on Reddit: Definitive list of all plant families?
May 12, 2024 -

Where can a novice find a list of all Plant families. I understand there is ongoing debate about domains and clades. I assume there is a list though, from a governing body?

I tried to download the World Flora Online Taxonomic Backbone. But I can’t get it to open up in excel, it’s too large. I sort of opened it in an online resource called gigasheet but it did not seem to have a complete list of all families (or maybe it was just flowering plants?)

When I go on websites like the catalog of life or the encyclopedia of life, you can certainly do a search for any single item or term; but I don’t see a place to just get a straight list of all Plant families.

Halp.

I feel pretty stupid.
