Opinions? Additions? Totally open to more name suggestions because Im bad with girl names. We have a very hard name with girl names.
We just found out we're having a baby GIRL!
The added difficulties of naming her are:
-
My husband is a teacher at a girls' school, so he automatically rejects most names because it reminds him of a student. He saw my list and went "no, no, no".
My list: Layla, Olivia, Isabella -
My husband's surname is a verb (something like Burns). So we have to be careful as the name will form a sentence.
-
No names starting with H or E.
I'm thinking that something SLIGHTLY out of the norm would be good, as it's less likely to remind him of a student.
Some possibilities I'm thinking about: Lola, Aria, Aurora
She has a brother named Ethan.
Please help!!
Thank you in advance
Even thinking about saying Aurora makes my mouth tired lol
It seems you like melodic names (Layla, Olivia, Isabella, Lola, Aria, Aurora), and tend to like names containing the letter L and ending with the letter A. How about something like Lyra, Lucia, Melinda, Melissa, Larissa, Lilliana, Rosella, Elina, Delancy and, as a wild card, Odette?
We had the perfect boy name picked out but alas, it's a girl and as Taylor Swift would say... I've got nothing in my brain. We have a lot of weird preferences for names and are struggling to find options that check all the boxes. My husband said he would describe our style as "rough", "hard", or "punchy" sounding.
Preferences (not strict):
outside the top 200/300 in the US
has hard consonant sounds/not too many S, F, L sounds
doesn't have a lot of vowels back-to-back/sing-songy sound
Firm Rules:
does not start with C
does not rhyme with or start with "Elle" sound
must have 1 or 2 standard/default/intuitive spellings
Names we like but aren't sold on for various reasons: Bridget, Bronwyn, Veronica, Jade, Scarlett, Monica, Tabitha, Greta
Thanks in advance, name nerds!
Hi all! My husband and I are trying to pick out baby names. We haven't picked a boy name either, but we have a much longer list of contenders because it seems like there are a lot more boy names that fit our style. We definitely steer toward harder sounding names - not a lot starting with vowels, a lot of hard Cs and Rs and almost all are only 1-2 syllables. Some of our favorites are Calvin, Wes, Judah, and Warren. I also like Reed/Reid, Russell, Penn, and Miles.
Unfortunately, we haven't found nearly as many girl names we like the sound of! We absolutely hate nicknames Ella/Ellie, Addy/Abby, and Livvy, so anything likely to end up with one of those is out. We don't like the soft vintage-y feel of a lot of the more popular girl names (Sophia, Evelyn, Olivia) anyway, nor do we want something that will make our child have to include their last initial in every classroom for the rest of time (I have a top 3 name from the year of my birth and hate it). We like Ruth, but hate the nn Ruthie so that's out. Our individual favorites that the other person isn't really on board with are Winnie (mine) and Renee (his). Neither of us are into unisex names or last names as first names for girls.
So, name nerds, what are your suggestions for 1-2 syllable consonant-heavy girl names?
Turning to Reddit for help! We are unable to come up with a name that we both love. We have a son with a very uncommon name that we knew was perfect for him. We would like another less common name for her, with easy spelling and intuitive pronunciation. Bonus points for a nice meaning, as the name to me helps picture/capture her personality. She will bring a brightness☀️ and a reminder of hope to our lives, and we hope she will be confident, adventurous, and ambitious. Some names we have liked but not sold on included Lillie, Elowen, Kira, and Naomi.
Which is so funny because when I was growing up and dreaming of my favourite names, girl names were always way WAY easier. Now, when it’s time to actually name a human I’m finding girl names harder. I don’t want anything too stuffy/traditional (sorry Margaret) but also not anything too modern (sorry Sailor). We also tend to like names that are shorter and popularity doesn’t bother us.
If we have a boy, two names we firmly agree on are Blake and Owen.
The only girl name that we agree on is Zoe (but he prefers Zoey spelling which I detest). I also like Ava. He prefers Avery, but I personally don’t like the “er” sound.
Any recommendations?
So many girl names sound so…fragile? I’m looking for a girls name that evokes power and agency, though not necessarily “strength” per se.
