How do you create a marketing strategy for a small business?

I am in a very similar situation, but 8 months ahead of you. This a little bit 'stream of conciousness' so apologies for jumping around:

The first thing I would recommend is to get your website in order, once it is up and running smoothly, the website acts as a hub of information which frees up your time to concentrate on other marketing needs.

Google analytics is my fave tool, I could spend all day seeing how people use our websites, get to know it.

Knowing your seo is essential but it is also a very deep rabbit hole. You could plunge most of your time into optimising so and learning it, but ultimately this is just 1 facet of marketing. Content is king, write articles and publish them on your website blog, look to answer common questions in your field, so that when people search you turn up.

If in doubt, ask for help, there are tonnes of companies and individuals that know much more than you, invest a little money in getting their advice.

Social media is also great, but same as above, can sap a lot of time so I would recommend hootsuite or a similar program to schedule your posts. Spend 1/2 hours a week planning posts, and let hootsuite do the rest. Be sure to check in on your sm, reply to posts, be contactable, see what your competitors are doing.

Social media should either entertain or educate. No one wants to be plagued by posts all about your company, sm should be 30% about what you guys are doing.

The rest of your content you can use to portray yourselves as being industry leading. Set up Google alerts about common topics and latest news in your field and post about them.

If relevant, check out trade magazines, some fields are more receptive to adverts than others, what is most effective in my experience are editorials. Most publications give discounts or free editorial when you place an ad. On this note, always, and I mean always, dismiss a publishers' initial price, they can and will go lower.

Aside from digital, support customers you already have. Positive word of mouth is still one of the best ways to cement your brand, people trust people.

Do you have brochures? Have you tried product videos? You don't need to invest a lot of money, purchase some video editing software and crack out some of your own. Might be an idea to pay someone to create a template for you to stick to, then it's just a matter of shooting, selecting and dropping in footage.

I'm currently making marketing plans for 2018 (for the first time) and have started by looking at best selling products, biggest margin and recent growth. This will determine which products to really push because you can't do them all. Work out a specific message for your product and stick to it. do your customers have peak times of year/minth/week/day- getting your message out is great but getting people to hear it is the tricky part.

Make sure you have a consistent brand message, make sure your whole company sends out correspondence that is in keeping with the image you want to portray.

Know your audience, what magazines do they read? What trade shows do they go to? Where do they get their news?

I've been working in a small business for 8 months as marketing coordinator. I previously worked at an agency and now am the sole marketing person in internationally selling company. It can be a bit overwhelming, once you get the ball rolling you will think of 100s of ways to market your company, the trick is prioritizing your time. I spend all day on email, supporting customers, creating content, planning what's next and most importantly analyzing what I have done. What worked? What didn't? Why didn't it work? What tweaks can I make? Trial, wait, analyze, tweak/ditch activity and try again.

Good luck over the coming months, I can honestly say this is the best job I've ever had, it can be incredibly changeable and rewarding.

Do research. From this research develop a core message. This message should also differentiate you from competitors while motivating contact, why choose us.

You've nailed the digital end. Now you just have to add the marketing part. AKA the kickoff post of every digital agency over the last couple years.

  • Become an exceptionally strong problem solver.

  • Master Excel, or at least be able to transform data from various sources and run v/hlookups.

  • Be able to interpret data and make meaningful decisions from it. Don't get struck with analysis paralysis.

  • Test what works, test best practices. There is no silver bullet for businesses.

  • Learn basic HTML/CSS

  • Learn how to take business objectives and distill them into achievable marketing strategies (and those strategies into tactics).
