Okay, I finally can put on official professional pants around here (aka I used to do contract furniture and still have an interest in chairs). Upholstery: don’t do synthetics or synthetic blends. Yes they will feel like they are water resistant but they will pill and will feel like shit if your bare legs touch them (people eat in their underwear it’s fine). Go for a natural blend. Don’t do velvet, you’ll be cleaning it/steaming it all the fucking time. If you can get chairs with upholstered back and seat, it might not seem like a huge difference but it makes a HUGE difference if you’re sitting around for longer periods. Skip arms, stick to armless chairs. Skip armchairs with a molded shell like this and go for a wider side chair like this . If you’re getting chairs from a good showroom, they should be able to advise you on the best upholstery for your needs. I have chairs with felted wool upholstery, and it’s so easy to clean because wool is a breeze with stains. Yes, even ketchup /pasta sauce/curry. I don’t like wood legs with wood floor (I want the contrast) and I don’t like wood legs with a heavy wood base table (too woody and the chairs tend to disappear) so if you choose something with a stylish base don’t go with a heavy based table. Chairs with metal bases (four leg, sled, tulip) tend to stand up better to wear and tear than wood four leg bases. You will need to decide if you want cheap or well made, the furniture industry only has those two modes. Lastly, if you go to a restaurant or especially a casual sports bar kind of a place and like a chair, don’t be shy to turn over the chair and see what make/model it is. Sports bars/chain casual restaurants have the highest turnaround per chair, and their furniture is treated like shit.
