Upholstered is way more comfortable. I had a set of wood chairs and got tie-on seat cushions but it still felt not soft enough and those cushions were quite cheap and flimsy. If the chairs are from a good brand the upholstery should be much more durable and comfortable More on reddit.com

In order to get an accurate measurement for your dining room chair seat, you’ll need to remove it from the frame and measure across the length and width of the seat at the widest points. Add at least 3 inches to each to account for fold over and stapling. If you have thick foam allow for that too in your measurements. I'd also like them to be easy to clean, or to hide stains. I don't have little kids anymore, so less food spillage. But it would be nice to have something that will stay nice looking.

Commercial designer here. I don’t go lower than 100,000 double rubs in high traffic. Look for crypton or coated. The fabric needs to be backed too or see if a backing can be applied. If you really want super, super durable, then look at vinyls. They make some that look like woven textiles in the commercial markets. Some even run as low as $35/yd.

I've done my dining chairs a few times. Most important is that the fabric is firm without any stretch. If it has any stretch it will sag (I was looking at some furnishing velvet in the store last week and was surprised that it stretched)...
