Many times a single bone can tell you what family it’s in. Then it’s fairly easy to make an educated assumption on overall appearance. If someone found a single bone of an undescribed tyrannosaurid we can reasonably assume what it looked like considering most tyrannosaurids looks very similar. And we can assume size based on comparing that bone to the same bone in other tyrannosaurids. Then further studying of that single bone could lead to differ findings down the road. Often times fossil bone used for jewelry is not identifiable to the point of being scientifically useful (i.e. broken and isolated bone fragments). That being said, you need to be a little careful about the source of the bone material. I would try to find a place that can give you as much information as possible about where the fossil came from and the permissions to collect it. The fossil trade industry can be murky at times and you need to be careful. I think it is important to remember that fossils are important to science and that should be the top priority. On the other hand private collectors have certainly saved plenty of incredible fossils from being lost to the elements.
