April 5, 2022 - According to the ETSU Natural History Museum in Gray, Tennessee, which recently unveiled the find, the dinosaur is so well-preserved that instead of a ‘fossil’, we could safely call it a ‘dinosaur mummy.’ · The researchers examining the find were astounded at its nearly unprecedented level of preservation. The creature’s skin, teeth, and even some of its guts were intact – something they’d never seen before.

February 20, 2024 - 12) in the journal PLOS One (opens in new tab), also proposes that dinosaur mummies with exceptionally well-preserved skin and soft tissues may be more common than scientists once thought. “There used to be an assumption that, in order to get a mummy, you absolutely had to have rapid burial,” meaning the dinosaur would have to be buried almost instantaneously at or near its time of death, said Stephanie Drumheller, co-lead author of the study and a palaeontologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Nodosaur Dinosaur ‘Mummy’ Unveiled With Skin And Guts Intact In Canada
January 23, 2025 - “Strong predation on a massive, heavily-armored dinosaur illustrates just how dangerous the dinosaur predators of the Cretaceous must have been,” said Brown. As if the preservation of skin, armor, and guts weren’t impressive enough, the dinosaur mummy is also unique in that it was preserved in three dimensions — meaning that the original shape of the animal was retained.

October 14, 2022 - It had been thought that soft tissue wouldn’t preserve if it was damaged prior to burial, so the carnivore damage is what really started us thinking about how these fossils form in the first place,” said Stephanie Drumheller-Horton, a paleontologist at the The University of Tennessee’s department of Earth and planetary sciences, a coauthor of the new study. Paleontologists used to think that a dinosaur, or any prehistoric creature, needed to be buried extremely rapidly for soft tissue to be preserved – but this was not the case for this poor hadrosaur.

This is amazing, thought I would share!
"In 2011, archaeologists uncovered one of the most — if not the most — pristine dinosaur fossils yet: a near-whole ankylosaur, complete with its jagged spikes, most of its limbs, armor coating, and some of its guts and stomach contents. The most amazing detail, though? Its uncannily preserved face and skin.

October 1, 2022 - Rest assured that after more than 65 million years, not a single DNA molecule or dinosaur protein / cell / tissue / 'guts' has remained intact. The external shape has been completely replaced by rock / minerals, allowing us a glimpse of what it looked like. It's an extremely rare event for the most resilient part, i.e. the bones or some of them, to fossilize. And then it's even rarer that any of the skin or other soft tissue would fossilize.

September 30, 2022 - But being buried quickly is what would allow it to mummify. The body would be there for many thousands of years before it could be fossilized, a specimen found like that nowadays would be called a mummy in most cases. I and looked it up and skin and even some guts are preserved.

September 14, 2022 - “It’s so well preserved you can see the individual scales, we can see some tendons and it looks like there’s going to be skin over the entire animal,” Brian Pickles, a paleontologist and ecology professor at the University of Reading, told USA TODAY. “Which means, if we’re really lucky, then some of the other internal organs might have preserved as well.” · World's oldest mammal: 'Shrew-like' animal that lived with dinosaurs 225 million years ago
