Brontosaurus: Reinstating a prehistoric icon | Natural History Museum
Due to the rules of scientific naming – the first name published gets priority – Brontosaurus was relegated to scientific history and the fossils reassigned to Apatosaurus. That was until a study in 2015 unexpectedly found evidence that Brontosaurus was distinct from Apatosaurus all along, signalling the reinstated status of this iconic dinosaur.

'Brontosaurus' name resurrected by new dino family tree | Science | AAAS
Now, a dinosaur-sized study of the family tree of the Diplodocidae, the group that includes such monstrous beasts as Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, and Barosaurus, finds that USPS got it right: The fossils originally called Brontosaurus show enough skeletal differences from other specimens of Apatosaurus that they rightfully belong to a different genus. The study, published online this week in the journal PeerJ, brings the long-banished name back into scientific respectability as a genus coequal with Apatosaurus.

July 20, 1998 - Apatosaurus was first described in 1877, two years before Brontosaurus, and, according to taxonomic naming rules, it therefore became the official genus under which both dinosaurs were classified. Consequently, the species B. excelsus was changed to A. excelsus, joining A. ajax in genus Apatosaurus, and the name Brontosaurus was reduced to a mere synonym.

Scientists use the first name given to an animal, so they decided to rename the Brontosaurus to Apatosaurus because Apatosaurus came first. Scientists now know that the back bones of the Apatosaurus grew together as the animal gets bigger. It was because the back bones changed that Dr.

Why was the name Brontosaurus incorrect according to scientific naming (renamed to Apatosaurus)
Top answer 1 of 5

Brontosaurus was named in 1879, whereas Apatosaurus was named in 1877 - so when further research was done that indicated both were actually the same genus, the older name had priority and Brontosaurus was abandoned. However, more recent research since then has reversed this, indicating Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus were in fact different genera and thus both are in active use again

There was nothing wrong with Brontosaurus on its own. What happened was that its original species Brontosaurus excelsus was considered so similar to Apatosaurus main species (A.ajax) that it sowuld be better to have them share a single genus as two species of Apatosaurus. "Brontosaurus" the genus was not used anymore, but its species excelsus has always/meen been known to be a different animal than A.ajax. A situation similar to the genus Panthera, that houses lions and tigers (P.leo & P.tigris) but they are known to be different species. This opinion of them sharing a genus was the main opinion for almost a century with most researchers accepting it. What changed was in 2015 in a study on the relations of Diplodocus-like dinosaurs it was proposed that excelsus along with couple other species were not that simlar to A.ajax and therefore it would be better to house them in a separate genus. Therefore the term "Brontosaurus" was revived in order to house these species (B.excelsus, B.parvus and B.yahnahpin). So Bronto was never something incorrect with Bronto nor was it rename to Apatosaurus. We used to have two boxes each one housing one species In the early 20th century it was decided the best way to refer to them was a single box with two species. But in recent time it has been proposed it would be better to the now five species in two distinct boxes, so the got they "got" the Brontosaurus box back and started to organize the species into two boxes: Brontosaurus box with three species and the Apatosaurus box with two.

April 7, 2015 - Wired described how the Brontosaurus name lost out: The mistake, he said, was in the number of sacrum bones (where the tail attaches to the spinal cord). The Apatosaurus sacrum was made of three bones, while the Brontosaurus had five. Rather than being different species, Riggs contended the Brontosaurus was just a younger version of the Apatosaurus, and the sacrum bones would have fused together as the dinosaur aged (bone fusing happens in many species, including humans).

After the right skull was linked to the Apatosaurus, it was realized that the Brontosaurus was the same dinosaur as the Apatosaurus. Since the name Apatosaurus was coined first, it was retained and the name Brontosaurus was deemed invalid.
