1 week ago - The television series creators decided to make this finale as a way of ending the series as they knew the show would be canceled when they created season 4. Michael Jacobs said, "We certainly wanted to make the episode to be educational to the audience", and as people knew dinosaurs were no longer alive, "the show would end by completing the metaphor and showing that extinction".

'Dinosaurs' Ending Explained: How the Ice Age Finale Was Developed
August 31, 2022 - Consider a top comment on the YouTube rip of the ending: “What’s worse is that, realistically, the baby would probably be the first to die, followed by the other family members one by one until Earl (the one with most body fat) was the only one left, his final moments filled with guilt over what he did to the world and his family.” Thanks for the nightmare fuel, “Dinosaurs!” · As I learned, many people thought I was dead wrong. I received dozens of messages on social, aghast at the show’s inclusion on the list. But given the tone of the correspondence, I knew I struck a different chord, one more personal and emotional than other times I divided fan bases with opinions: *”I would say one of the best endings, even if it was uncomfortable and kind of heartbreaking.

Dinosaurs Shocking Series Finale Was Always Planned Says Kirk Thatcher
November 22, 2022 - In the story, a species of beetles goes extinct because their breeding ground gets paved over with a parking lot for a wax company. This ends up creating an environmental chain reaction that starts an Ice Age. The episode never shows the dinosaurs freezing to death, but it’s pretty easy to see that this is the direction that the story goes after the credits roll.

October 1, 2023 - From my childhood I swore I remember this show having a Meteor shower ending which caused the ice age. Still was a sad ending no matter which one it is. ... Whoooaaaa I remember the same thing!! WTF! ... Did some Google-fu and I think what we're rememebering is an episode from Season 2 where the meteor hits and explodes but its a throw away joke they dont explain? ... Plus decades of being told that an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs won't help anyone's recollection.

Things You Should Know About: The 'Dinosaurs' Finale
March 13, 2019 - It’s this fate that is explored in the final Dinosaurs episode, “Changing Nature.” Though it aired in 1994 and Henson died in 1991, he was heavily involved in the creation of the show in his final months. So whether he had planned the ending or the show merely concluded with fitting Henson darkness is difficult to say, but what is more clear is that the finale is just batshit crazy.

Dinosaurs Show Ending Controversy Addressed By Writers
September 1, 2022 - Now, Dinosaurs series writers Kirk Thatcher and Tim Doyle address the dark ending in an interview with Variety. Doyle defends the decision, stating that the series was always a political- and social satire aimed at culture's rampant consumerism. Thatcher states that Henson's intention was to use the dinosaurs as a stand-in for humanity's arrogance about being the top of the food chain without thinking about the consequences of our actions.
