Direct vent vs ventless for new fireplace
I purchased a home with a ventless. I use it for 1 purpose: Getting cute pictures around Christmas time, and no more than twice per year. Here's why: It smells -- even after doing the "recommended 6 hour burn on high with windows open". I open the rear sliding door, the front door, AND turn my attic fan on high when using it AFTER a 6 hour burn with nobody in the house. The smell still lingers. Upon researching the nature of ventless in my home, I discovered that N02 is another byproduct of using one. Most people (including me) only monitor for carbon monoxide and low oxygen levels -- not N02. I encourage you to go look up N02 real quick and decide for yourself what is best for your family. Can I seal the gap around my direct vent gas fireplace pipe?
I watched a video on YouTube so I'm a professional in this field & there's a gap for a reason of keeping the flue away from a combustible material. There definitely are materials for super high temp but it wasn't designed to be sealed & if there is a problem your insurance company might have a problem with it More on reddit.com
Direct vent gas stove, what brands should I avoid?
I have a heat-n-glo fireplace insert. I love the unit. We picked it because of the flame view while it was on at a fireplace shop. The flame patterns vary from model to model so pick one that you like. If a stove it doesn't matter. Mine had a wall switch that is great. More on reddit.com

I'll just use one of my many alts if I feel like commenting, so reddit can suck it.

There's some terminology. "Inserts" are built to go inside an old brick firebox, so they're quite shallow. Inserts are considerably more expensive than full fireplaces. You don't want an insert. But, yes, ventless units are pretty cheap. In your case it sounds like a direct vent unit with a rear vent would be the best. Popping the vent right out the rear wall is pretty straightforward. Though if you're changing exterior framing that will be more expensive than the unit itself. If you're putting it on an exterior wall and venting is easy then I think it's definitely worth it to get a direct vent unit. Ventless, for me, would be a compromise for areas where venting was nigh impossible.
