Direct vent vs ventless for new fireplace
I purchased a home with a ventless. I use it for 1 purpose: Getting cute pictures around Christmas time, and no more than twice per year. Here's why: It smells -- even after doing the "recommended 6 hour burn on high with windows open". I open the rear sliding door, the front door, AND turn my attic fan on high when using it AFTER a 6 hour burn with nobody in the house. The smell still lingers. Upon researching the nature of ventless in my home, I discovered that N02 is another byproduct of using one. Most people (including me) only monitor for carbon monoxide and low oxygen levels -- not N02. I encourage you to go look up N02 real quick and decide for yourself what is best for your family. Can I seal the gap around my direct vent gas fireplace pipe?
I watched a video on YouTube so I'm a professional in this field & there's a gap for a reason of keeping the flue away from a combustible material. There definitely are materials for super high temp but it wasn't designed to be sealed & if there is a problem your insurance company might have a problem with it More on reddit.com

Direct vent gas stove, what brands should I avoid?
I have a heat-n-glo fireplace insert. I love the unit. We picked it because of the flame view while it was on at a fireplace shop. The flame patterns vary from model to model so pick one that you like. If a stove it doesn't matter. Mine had a wall switch that is great. More on reddit.com

Am I missing something, or are vented gas fireplaces significantly more expensive than ventless? Can I add a vent to a ventless unit?
ventless will add a lot of humidity to your house. Direct vent out the back with a blower is worth it. Getting gas to the location may cost as much as the unit.... More on reddit.com

r/Fireplaces on Reddit: Direct vent vs ventless for new fireplace
December 22, 2024 -

We currently have an electric fireplace that we are wanting to replace with gas logs. Trying to decide between a direct vent vs ventless system. We do not have a chimney but the fireplace is on an outside wall. There is a covered porch that the wall shares but it’s open and not walled or screened in, hopefully that makes sense.

We are wanting the gas fireplace mostly for heat in case power goes out. Currently have geothermal hvac system but wife wants a family room with more heat. The electric fireplace puts out heat like a space heater but the room is larger and is not efficient. I don’t believe a wood burning stove or fireplace is possible because it would be very expensive to add a chimney.

Have been told by 1 fireplace store that direct vent option would be more expensive only because of the need to add the vent to the outside wall.

A ventless system was quoted around 7k for firebox, log and gas line installation. This does not include finishing the fireplace surround (stone, wood, tile, etc).

We aren’t huge fans of the ventless systems due to the negative aspects of decreased 02 levels, mold etc. But we also don’t want to pay a ton more money.

At the fireplace store we noticed the ventless system heated the room air up quicker compared to direct vent. But after while the direct vent was heating the furniture and floor vs the air which almost made it seem warmer.

So what’s the best option for new fireplace that will provide supplemental heat (more than space heater) but still somewhat safe? Any opinions, options, recommendations or advice is appreciated. Thanks!
