Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces | Napoleon
September 25, 2025 - Cooler air is drawn into the firebox from the outside, which then efficiently pushes the hot air inside the box out through the venting. Indoor air is pulled in and circulated around the outside of the box that is heated by the fire and moved into the room for cozy heat. One of the best parts about a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace is that they do not require electricity to operate.

Considering a direct vent propane fireplace
I've had two houses with them (nat gas though), and there where no issues with the siding. The problem we had was that they where HOT. So we really could only run them for ~15 minutes, then had to turn them off as the room got too warm. So I wish the ones we had did a better job with lower heat output levels (or just a smaller fireplace). More on reddit.com

Gas Fireplace is Drafty, How Can I Reduce Outside Air from Coming Inside?
You can buy magnetic fireplace draft stoppers. I bought some and they are working good. When I want to use the fireplace I just remove them, light the pilot, and start the fireplace. Doesnt add much time. Its a good solution for someone like me that uses their fireplace once in a while. More on reddit.com

Installing patio cover above fireplace vent. What's the right amount of clearance?
The only place that has the correct vent clearances for a direct vent cap is in the manual for that exact fireplace model. Pay no attention to other clearances "I find online for various vent boxes" because they are wrong, your fireplace was tested and a clearance generated. Somewhere on your fireplace, lower grill area is a good place to start is a tag with mod#, name, mfg etc. unless removed by jerks, the tag is here for just this reason. More on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Considering a direct vent propane fireplace
November 2, 2017 -

I'm researching direct vent propane fireplaces. We have what we believe is the perfect set up to install one although we have yet to consult an installer to confirm - we have an extra propane valve going unused, the wall we want to install it on is right above the manifold and venting should be relatively easy except I'm worried about the vent on the exterior. What I don't want is to end up with damaged or soot covered siding. I imagine since it's propane fueled there may not be soot issues but...

Does anyone have a direct vent gas fireplace and if so, how is the exterior of your house holding up at the vent site?
