If there's someone in this sub who has experience either installing or fixing various brands - I'd love to get a quick view on each from an expert. I haven't been able to find this in my internet sleuthing. We're looking to install a direct vent fireplace to replace where an old insert was, the chimney has since been removed. I have a couple companies nearby that offer the following......
I should mention that we're just looking for an upper end, single sided, natural gas direct vent that looks like a traditional fireplace. It would get used sporadically during the colder months in NJ.

Largest firebox/flame presentation will be Town & Country (at the expense of a deep framing rough opening and overall inefficiency). Best overall option (heat, flame presentation, options for interior panels, logs etc.) will be Mendota. They have a wide range of products (including 3 Landscape profile models that are unlike many in the industry) and are very well built. Besides the brand, you should consider the dealers technical service. You will need service at one point or another and having a dealer with a competent service department is invaluable. I am currently considering a Napoleon Park Avenue (stock picture below) as it has the right BTU range and is a good size (not too big since I will be building a "fireplace" for it a bit like the 2nd picture below). It also can work without electricity, which is a big plus for me. I have been looking at all the brands that come up with a basic google search, but I know there is a chance I am missing something better. The Park Avenue is not out of the ballpark price-wise (around 4 thou) but I sure would be happier spending less if I could!
