hey guys

I seem to have a kind of irritating problem (probably something I have completely missed)

But I am having a really hard time turning off the Dell support assist in the bios. It runs every time I restart the computer and it is really annoying. Sometimes I can’t even cancel it.

I went into the bios and turned it off yet it still runs. is there another setting I am somehow missing?

thank you for your help!

July 1, 2022 -

Title says it all. Dell fucked up my PC last night (bit of an older model, 17R2) by pushing out an update for supportassist that made my pc freeze up and test the fans (left, then right) like it would in the real fan test. Basically, they fucked up something THEY made. Guess what was causing it? Dell Data Vault (part of supportassist) and when I deleted supportassist? It magically fixed.

The only reasons you ever need any Dell Apps installed: Dell Update - this is actually a minimalistic app that does updates your drivers and nothing else really. This one is okay. Power Manager - Useful app for managing your thermals and your charging options, but not really necessary because you can do it all in the BIOS. Support Assist - you'll only need this if you need to contact Dell Tech Support for any reason. If there's nothing wrong with your computer, just don't bother with it. It has a history of security flaws, and it makes sense for people who aren't tech savvy at all, or for Dell technicians who need to access your computer remotely. All other Dell Apps - it's mostly just bloatware and gimmicky. They make lovely laptops, but their creativity with software is pretty abysmal. You seriously are better off installing a fresh copy of Windows - not the restore utility that your Dell product shipped with - just got to Microsoft and download their installation media creation tool and install that way. The laptop I'm using at this moment, the original Windows 10 installation would bluescreen at least 3 times a day, had really awful crazy unpredictable performance, and it had MacAfee installed, which was a burning dumpster fire to try to troubleshoot. I had no choice but to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 (11 was in beta at the time) on my laptop, and everything was dramatically better. In fact, right now, Windows 11 runs like a dream on this thing.

I know I'm late to the party, but unfortunately, at the end of 2024, Alienware Update will no longer be supported, and it says to download and use Support Assist instead. I really hope this doesn't screw those of us that have an Alienware.

@PaulEsty1993 wrote: No, the machines just have the standard version of the software installed. Hi PaulEsty1993: Am I correct that these Dell computers are clients on a local area network that are managed centrally by a systems administrator? How many client computers are we talking about, and are any of these computers connecting to your LAN from a remote location where they can't be easily accessed? Your original question implies that it is not possible (or at least inconvenient) to turn off System Repair or uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as SupportAssist OS Recovery or System Repair) from each computer individually, and that you are looking for a quick solution that can be applied remotely to all machines by your systems administrator. If so, I have no idea how to do this, so hopefully someone else following this thread will jump in to explain if this is possible. In a normal business environment I believe you would be using SupportAssist for Business and then managing all SupportAssist settings remotely from the TechDirect portal as described in the SupportAssist for Business PCs with Windows OS Deployment Guide. I don't know what is or isn't practical in your organization so apologies in advance if some of the following comments aren't useful to you. Dell SupportAssist Remediation creates a new system repair point (system snapshot) about 30 min after each boot-up and saves it in a hidden, protected folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder.  You are correct that older versions of SupportAssist were known to have a bug where the size of that hidden folder could grow beyond the maximum 12-15 GB of allocated disk space because older system repair points were not being purged as new ones were created. See SteveTree's Reduce Disk Space Used by SARemediation that notes that this extra disk space can be recovered by disabling System Repair in either the SupportAssist settings at Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair or in the SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager (Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings) as shown below. In your case it sounds like your don't want to use the SupportAssist OS Recovery environment described at all and already have an alternate system in place for emergency recovery (I use Macrium Reflect Free imaging software on my home PC). In that case it would make more sense to disable the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service as shown below so that Dell SupportAssist Remediation can't launch at boot-up or simply uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. Once Dell SupportAssist Remediation is uninstalled SupportAssist will likely offer it again as an optional ~ 350 MB update called SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools. I'm not sure, however, if the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools could be inadvertently reinstalled again if you allow SupportAssist to run automatic background scan for available updates [i.e., if Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers is enabled]. Note that I currently have Dell SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 and Dell SupportAssist Remediation (a.k.a. SupportAssist OS Recovery) v5.5.4.16189 installed on my Inspiron 5584 but I normally have three services - Dell SupportAssist, Dell SupportAssist Remediation, and Dell TechHub - disabled so that both these programs cannot automatically launch at boot-up on my system.-------------------64-bit Win 10 Pro v21H2 build 19044.1889 * Firefox v104.0.2 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.2207.7-1.1.19600.3 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.14.210-1.0.1751 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.6979 * Dell SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 * Dell Update Windows Universal v4.6.0 * Dell SupportAssit Remediation v5.5.4.16189 * Inspiron 5583/5584 BIOS v1.20.0Dell Inspiron 15 5584, Intel i5-8265U CPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB Toshiba KBG40ZNS256G NVMe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics 620
