Ceramic Faucets are Best in Class for a Reason
February 14, 2025 - Ceramic discs work best because they offer little to no leakage and are user-friendly. They require minimal effort to operate, so if used frequently in public buildings or by children, they will not wear and tear. Installation (if replacing a faucet that does not already have ceramic discs) only requires about ten minutes.

How To Fix a Leaky Single-handle Disk Faucet
December 7, 2022 - Like most cartridge or ball faucets, a disk faucet usually has one handle (though there are some double-handle models). However, if you are facing fixing a leaky old-fashioned faucet, for example, it is not a disc faucet but rather it has compression valves, which is a much different and easier fix.

r/Ceramics on Reddit: Manufacturing Ceramic Discs in Faucet Cartridges
December 10, 2023 -

Dear Reddit I am an engineering student and I'm working on these ceramic discs which are used in water faucets. These are not manufactured in my country and I want to come up with a way to manufacture them. From what I understand so far, the real challenge is surface roughness which provides the sealing. Is this true? And if so, what are methods for achieving the required level of roughness? I appreciate any advice, information or reference in regard to these parts. Thanks in advance.

They look like alumina or yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Often alumina is yellow from nitrogen impurities during firing. Both are pretty mechanically robust and chemically stable. I've never looked into how they are made but I think they're probably pressure cast. Think slip cast but with air pressure so you get much thicker parts. It's more.complicated but that's the basic idea. For the smooth surfaces, since they're planar, 99percent sure they are machine polished. Probably with diamond. Took a quick look at existing parents and everyone's being suspiciously non-specific regarding the type of ceramic. Wish I could tell you more, most of this information is just ancillary to the work I do because I use different kinds of ceramic crucibles in my line of work. You could ask for information from a ceramics manufacturer perhaps. I have had good communications with Almath crucibles in the past and might recommend pinging their sales team for contact info with one of their engineers. They're a little more human than CoorsTek which is now too big to care about little people. I've never tried stalking LinkedIn for CoorsTek employees in an engineering dept but maybe you could weasle your way in that way? Best of luck

As far as I know those discs are made by dry pressing of spray dried Aluminium oxide powder. After debinding and sintering the surfaces are lapped . You can see a video of the lapping process here . This book is a good read if you want to learn more about technical ceramics. Good luck sourcing all that machinery in Iran :)
