Hello. I'm going to be studying abroad soon, so I am wondering if my Discover card would be good for regular day to day purchases, or if I should get a different card. I know there are no foreign purchase fees, but I am wondering if I make a purchase in yen, does Discover use the current mid-market exchange rate? Or do they use a different exchange rate (where I get less yen per dollar)?

I've used Discover a couple times internationally and they use the current exchange rate at the time of purchase. The charge statement will show the exchange rate so you can compare if you want.

I was considering taking my Discover debit card with me on a future trip as a backup for online purchases as they don’t charge ftf, so i wanted to test it out first. I am not a debit card user normally, as i put everything on credit cards, but i noticed that Discover basically just declines every transaction in a foreign currency or even merchants not located in the US.
This is just inconvenient, and im not even getting any text/email alerts for it, nor any prompt that lets me answer “yes or no this is fraud”.
A bit disappointed but works just fine locally in the US. The only “backup” utility this card will provide is if i need to book a flight or hotel through an app that uses payment processors located in the US, like gotogate or Bookingcom.

Discover debit only works in Mexico, it didn't work in Canada or Europe , only mexico. I used it in Mexico City in stores, restaurants, Starbucks and uber to get around Mexico City and there was no foreign transaction fee. I also used it in HSBC bank and Citibank and Santander bank to withdraw Mexican pesos from the atms but only on HSBC there was no foreign transaction fee , Citibank and Santander bank did charge a fee when withdrawing money .

You're using the debit card, right? If you look at the FAQs on the Discover checking web page, it specifically says that the debit card only works in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The credit card works in other countries, but not debit. I don't know why they put that limitation on there.
