Discover Bank CD Rates: Solid But Not Highest - NerdWallet
September 16, 2019 - NerdWallet's take: Discover® Bank’s CD rates don’t lead the pack of online banks with high-yield CDs, but yields are solid or moderately competitive across a larger range of terms than most banks offer.

Discover CD is advertising 5.1% but it turns out is much less. Is this illegal?
No. Interest is usually calculated and shown on an annual basis. The rate and term are disclosed. They even show you on their website how much interest you would earn. Interest is calculated daily and compounded. You earn the rate you are promised. Not illegal and not misleading. More on reddit.com

Best cd rates 12 month right now, where to actually get decent returns?
Check out the rankings on nerdwallet and the like and scroll past the promo crap to get to the list. A lot of the top rates are with credit unions and many have an online presence under different names - we opened a 12-mo CD with HUSTL Financial (awful name but it’s just some credit union in Arizona) and it’s been fine - I see they list a rate of 4.1 rn. High-yield savings vs. High-yield CD
I see you are also with Marcus. Just depends on how much liquidity you want and how much is in there. Saving for a house in 2 years? go ahead and put all but an emergency fund in the CD. Only have an emergency fund in there? Keep is in HYSA. More on reddit.com

r/legaladvice on Reddit: Discover CD is advertising 5.1% but it turns out is much less. Is this illegal?
April 16, 2024 -

I'm looking for methods to save my money in lower risk cd's, and got an advertisement from Discover for 5.1%. My English isn't as strong as my math skills, and I didn't understand what APY meant. If APY is 5.1% on a 9 month term, the actual payout is 3.8% - which is even less than their high yield savings account.

Shouldn't this be false advertising and illegal? It's extremely deceptive and has turned me off from Discover forever. They're trying to push me in to a CD product that they can pay out less, by advertising a higher payout over 12 months that they are only paying in 9 months.
