I go to Europe for the first time at the end of May. While booking tours, I realized a lot of places didn’t take Discover. After some research, I learned my Discover card is not going to be accepted at most places during my trip. This is my first and only credit card. I know need to get either a Visa or Mastercard. The Venture X and Chase Sapphire were both recommended to me by coworkers, but I can’t seem to justify the annual fee. (My mom always told me it was a scam?) I travel, but one out of the US once a year. I fly domestically ~2-3 times a year. Suggestions for a foreign travel card for a newbie? I’ve only had my Discover 2 years, my credit it 760.
Quick question does Discover have foreign transaction fees? Specifically the Discover Secured Card. I can't find this information anywhere. If so how much is it and if not is there a place where I can see what cards have one? Thanks so much!
I am going to travel oversea soon and have just got a pre-approved offer from Discover. Discover is known for not charging the typical 3% Foreign Transaction Fee most MC and VC charge. So I was all ready to apply for a Discover to use oversea. But then, a friend tell me not to be fooled by Discover. He claims that while MC and VC use a currency exchange rate very close to the mid-market value, Discover's is much less favorable to the card member. He claims that, at the end when all is said and done, the extra money Discover makes from using a less favorable currency exchange rate makes up for, if not surpasses, the money they don't make by not charging a Foreign Transaction Fee.
By checking with the official MC (https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert-currency.html) and VC (https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html) currency converter, it seems to be true that MC's and VC's rates are both very close to the mid-market value. But I can't anything online that shows the rate Discover uses.
So, does anyone have any real-world experience or inside knowledge on this to either confirm or debunk my friend's claim?
Why is that information not easily found on their website?

Does discover change a fee if I use my card in Europe? Has anyone used their card in Europe and it worked? Does Europe have their own fees that they charge?
Hello. I'm going to be studying abroad soon, so I am wondering if my Discover card would be good for regular day to day purchases, or if I should get a different card. I know there are no foreign purchase fees, but I am wondering if I make a purchase in yen, does Discover use the current mid-market exchange rate? Or do they use a different exchange rate (where I get less yen per dollar)?
Hi, what are the fees for transferring money from Discover to an international bank (not usd)? What's the base fee and then conversion fee?
Also what's the best way to send it? Both will be my bank.
Thank you!
I was considering taking my Discover debit card with me on a future trip as a backup for online purchases as they don’t charge ftf, so i wanted to test it out first. I am not a debit card user normally, as i put everything on credit cards, but i noticed that Discover basically just declines every transaction in a foreign currency or even merchants not located in the US.
This is just inconvenient, and im not even getting any text/email alerts for it, nor any prompt that lets me answer “yes or no this is fraud”.
A bit disappointed but works just fine locally in the US. The only “backup” utility this card will provide is if i need to book a flight or hotel through an app that uses payment processors located in the US, like gotogate or Bookingcom.
And if so did it work ? Yes i also have a chase Sapphire and a Wells Fargo debit card both visas as a back up and since there both visas i am 100% sure they will definitely work internationally. But I'm just wondering about discover since i also have one . I'm going to Mexico next month . Supposedly according to the discover website it's supposed to work in over 200 countries including Mexico. But I can't find anything recent online of actual people that used a discover card outside the US . So if anyone has used one outside the US ? Did it work and how was the experience using it ? Thanks .
Quick question can I use my discover debit card if I’m on vacation can I use it in Jamaica at the atm and places cause I have my vacation money on there
Hi,
I am travelling to France for work in a little under a week and wanted to know if I will be able to use Discover there? I read that Discover does not have any foreign transaction fees. But I am worried about its acceptability. If not, which other credit card do you recommend?
Thanks!
Hi Everyone, I'm have Discover It credit card and wondering is it possible for me to use it as my main credit card for international travel to the UK in the upcoming months? Thank you
I wouldn't use it as your main, I don't think Discover is well-accepted in the UK
Visa or Mastercard is your best bet
Discover is not widely accepted. You'll have to do some work to find places that will accept it.

When I applied for my cash back debit card, it asked me “do you plan on using your debit card for international use?” I selected “no”
Will I still be able to use it internationally?
Hi all,
So I am looking to use a very specific VPN service named Mullvad (I have my reasons). The price of the VPN is 5 euros. I figured this would be good to put on my Discover card and auto-pay to build my credit score. First off, can I even do this since it is in euros? Second, will I get charged a fee each time? If so, I'll just use my Charles Schwab bank account instead. Lastly, will this count towards my credit score since it's a foreign transaction?
