Jacob's Ladder is a classic if you're into psychological stuff, and inspired a ton of stuff that came after it including Silent Hill. Note that the remake is bullshit though. The original is the beat. Answer from TragedyWriter on reddit.com

r/horror on Reddit: Looking for the scariest psychological horror movies you can think of
September 28, 2023 -

During October I like to watch a Horror movie every night, ending with a full evening of Horror on Halloween, I like the Halloween session to actually terrify me but I've become very desensitised to Horror so most of the slasher/monster/gore/Supernatural movies just don't scare me anymore.

So I'm looking for recommendations for psychological horror movies that are either terrifying, unbelievably creepy or extremely uncomfortable.

I'm asking Reddit because every list of the "scariest movies" has completely failed me.

Think along the lines of Midsommar, Dogtooth, Creep and Get Out... but scarier.

Thank you!

Edit: Lots of replies so I may not be able to respond to all of them, but I appreciate them, and will let you know what I think of the movies you suggested after I watch them!

I would personally recommend The Invitation (the 2015 movie -- not the 2022 one, although the 2022 movie, which is unrelated to 2015 movie, is entertaining). It's a great example of extremely simple but brilliant storytelling. The characters are wonderful. The acting is great. Same goes for the writing and directing. You get some queer representation. The story is familiar, as all stories sort of are, but The Invitation tackles a familiar situation in a way that feels fresh. It plays with your mind a bit as you try to figure out what's going on. It's debatably arthouse, which I'm suuuuuuuper allergic to, but it never feels look-at-how-smart-and-artsy-and-weird-we-are-for-the-sake-of-being-smart-and-artsy-and-weird. Also, the ending is an absolute stunner. No spoilers, of course, but the last few shots are just so delightful and rewarding. They elevate an already outstanding movie. I can't really say anything more about those final shots without ruining your experience, but it's... It's great, dude. I love this movie more and more each time I watch it. I just showed it to my boyfriend and he was blown away. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you for a long time. At least, it's stuck with me over the years. Lots of pathos. Lots of mindfuckery. And lots of follow through. So, yeah. Can't recommend it enough. I love a story that puts characters first, and this movie certainly does that. The emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. It's just so wonderfully executed. I could go on and on about it. Blah-blah-blah... I think it's a winner. Check it out, if you want to. If you do, reply to this comment and let me know what you think! Cheers.

I prefer those types of movies. Thing is, I think fear comes from the shock of something happening to someone but that only REALLY works if you didn't know that kind of stuff happened or the film makers did such a good job making you feel empathy that you get upset from seeing it happen to the people in the film. We often have built in empathy for animals like dogs and cats which is why they tend to be so effective. With that TED Talk out of the way... IDK how scary these are but they're some of my favorites that are in the vein you described. Only one that made me physically uncomfortable (anxious) was Nocturnal Animals for 'that scene'. But they're all worth the watch! Nocturnal Animals St. Maude The Lodge House That Jack Built The Lighthouse Strangers Funny Games Clockwork Orange The Gift Not technically horror but kinda scary and a great film: Ex Machina

r/movies on Reddit: What is the best, most disturbing psychological thriller/horror?
July 6, 2021 -

I'm aware this is a somewhat frequently asked question, but i couldn't really find anything that would live up to my expectations.

For example the American Psycho and The Machinist, Black Swan and Perfect Blue were quite some interesting titles but they didn't really leave me with a deep shock or some kind of emotional disturbance in the end.

I've also seen things like the Human Centipede and not going to lie, it was pretty disturbing but somewhy it didn't give me such an emotional terror.

I'm looking for something that is way more serious and perhaps even more philosophical or psychological than those. I'd like also like to avoid jumpscares if possible, since i just find those rather annoying.

I don't mind surrealism or fantasy elements in a movie as long as they are portrayed as something coming out of someone's imagination or mind but not trying to be sold as "reality". In other words, i would like something that sticks to reality as much as possible, and gives me a more raw or artistic feeling to the movie than Hollywood style.

Sorry if this isn't quite the best question, i am not sure myself how to describe what i'm seeking for exactly, but hope it somewhat makes sense!

Thank you for everyone's suggestion and time!

Edit: You guys are awesome. Definitely got my next few months of movies lined up!!

Really into horror, but have just discovered a new love for psychological horror and I want to know which movie you would recommend the most. It can have anything in it: gore, sensitive topics, etc., but english/british/australian movies only because I cannot stand subtitles🤦🏻‍♀️

TIA!

I’ve gotten back into horror lately and I’m looking for some good recommendations. I like horror films that make you think, full of suspense, keep you tense and on the edge of your seat.

Slasher/gore horror kinda bores me. Nothing that’s just people getting murdered.

For context here are some that I love and am looking for a similar vibe to:

The Black Phone (2021) Hold Your Breath (2024) Run (2020) Clock (2023)

You all gave me amazing dark comedy movies for my first Reddit post almost a year ago, and I must request the council’s opinion once more. It truly feels that this is the best place to go for suggestions. I am a huge horror fan, but as many of you know, the genre is extremely over saturated with garbage. Jump scares are fine, as long as the film EARNS them. I don’t want a giant audio cue and “jump scare” for a rat scurrying across the ground or something. Supernatural elements are ABSOLUTELY on the table as long as it’s executed correctly. You guys were amazing with your comedy suggestions, so I know there has to be some genuine horror connoisseurs here. For reference, some of my favorite horror movies that mostly fit this criteria are:

-The Thing (OG) -Hereditary -Haunting of Hill House (show) -Haunting of Bly Manor (show) -Midnight Mass -The Woman in Black (SOME cheap scares, but fantastic atmosphere and tone imo) -Silent Hill(with Sean Bean) -Babadook (I know some laugh at that film being called “scary”, but I truly felt a sense of dread while watching. Awesome psychological horror.

Are ‘Color out of Space” or Long Legs worth watching? I thank the council for its gracious suggestions and for its time.

I’ve been looking for some more super scary psychological horror movies. Well I guess not just psychological horror I just mean not slashers. This might be a hated opinion here but I’m not a big fan of slashers or exploitation films or anything like that. I don’t have a problem with gore but when it’s overused it loses its effect on me. Like texas chainsaw massacre does nothing for me because it’s just not scary (in my opinion). An example of a movie with lots of gore that I still enjoyed is midsommar because it’s more disperse, in my opinion selective, and therefor more effective. Anyone got any good recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Edit: I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who left recommendations, I didn’t check this post for a while and there are way too many comments for me to answer but I appreciate it

I love things like The Thing, Shutter, Oculus, Skeleton Key, any and all Evil Dead films (apart from the new one) also love slashers like the OG Scream + Halloween. I love getting mind fucked and appreciate a twist. Also love when a movie has an unhappy ending.

I don’t like gore porn/shock horror. If it’s gore filled just for the sake of being, it’s ick to me. Things like Terrifyer is not scary at all to me. It’s entertaining but not scary. I spit on your grave is another example.

Any suggestions? Old or new. Looking for new things to watch! :)

I have no idea why I like these. Looking for something like the Machinist or Hereditary. Something where a character becomes increasingly disturbed. Or a movie that lingers with you because it is just so disturbing psychologically

So my favorite genre of all time is horror (no suprise lol), but within that genre one of my favorite sub genres is psychological horrors/thrillers. However, I find that I can never really find any good psychological thrillers that really make me think (which is my ultimate goal.) I'd really love a movie that makes me question shit, like with grey morals or a grey protagonist. Those aren't requiremnets, but that would be nice.

For example, some of my favorite movies are these (not in any particular order):

  1. Silence of the Lambs

  2. The Sixth Sense

  3. Psycho

  4. Shutter Island

  5. Fight Club (not horror but ifykyk)

  6. Scream

And I'm currently watching the og Saw, which I really like so far. I know these are really basic, I promise I've seen a lot more but these movies stick out to me when I think about my favorites. Also my favorite book is misery by Stephen King, if that also helps. Sorry that this post was so long, I just really wanted some new horror movies to watch and expience since I love this genre so much. Oh and I'm not opposed to gore, it's actually quite fun to watch if done tastefully.

me and my friend are looking for the weird kind of psychological thrillers/horror. we don’t want anything like a serbian film or salo or anything super gory. we are okay with some gore but looking for a more kind of mind-fuck horror movie with a plot twist or a good story.

things that we really enjoyed: midsommar, incident in a ghostland, martyrs
