I’m a drawer newbie so please excuse my ignorance.
I have a 48”x27” space on the bottom of one side of my work bench. I’d love to do a sliding tray to access the items on the back side without having to roll out the table from the wall. The problem is 48” drawer slides are almost $200. (about as much as I have into the workbench so far for everything else.) Any more economical options, DIY or otherwise? I thought about just waxing some rails and sliding the tray on those but I wonder how it will work with such a large and heavy tray.

You could do a rolling shelf if it is on the bottom. I have seen people put four small casters at the inside corners of the drawer bottom with the majority of the weight on them. Then you can use a cleat/rail between the drawer and cabinet to keep them aligned without binding on you due to needing to support the weight of the cabinet. That is likely the cheapest option as I just checked 1200mm slides from Aliexpress , who knows if they are even worth a damn, and they cost $193. I'd search for 1200mm in addition to 48" when you are looking for them as that may give you more options. (48"=1219.2mm)

November 25, 2023 - Drawer bottom. Since I need to make 3 new drawers for the bedroom I can make them with the needed clearances for either side or undermount slides. If I had to I could make new boxes for the hall or disassemble and reconstruct the existing. I would like to minimize the time and effort required.
