These systems, such as Rev-A-Shelf’s RSRAS.SMFD.52, use metal rails that are cut to fit the file cabinet drawer’s dimensions. Next, the rails are assembled into a frame, dropped in place, and fastened to the front and back of the drawer. With drop-in components, both letter-sized and legal-sized file systems can be built. Plus, creating divided storage is simple. To recap, the important items to consider when building a DIY file drawer are its interior dimensions, maximum load rating, and type of hanging rail system.

Easy DIY Ikea Multi-Drawer File Cabinet Makeover - Erin Zubot Design
January 31, 2025 - When it comes to easy DIY projects, this one is one of the easier ones so I should be able to describe the process for you. I was inspired by this project by the Painted Hive, where she used peel-and-stick flooring to create faux drawers on an ugly file cabinet she found second-hand! I thought that was such a great idea, I used a lot of her suggestions and tweaked it a bit to make it work for me. Check out her blog post on that here. I started with the Gallant Ikea Filing cabinet in Black.

July 1, 2023 - About 12 months ago I found myself no longer needing a full size filing cabinet anymore. However, I still needed a convenient way to store the files that I wanted to keep. TIP: If you are having trouble with the wood trim splintering, place a piece of frog or painter's tape over the area you intend to cut. After the first piece of wood trim is cut, repeat the process until you have enough trim pieces to cover your file drawers. I ended up needing 26 pieces of wood for each drawer. Once all the trim pieces are cut, lay them on top of your file drawers to determine if the end pieces need to be ripped. Luckily, my cabinet was a perfect size and I did not need to rip any trim pieces.

I have a builder I just need the plans, everything I find online is crap. I really need just one or two drawers to store some art prints.

The problem is that nobody here is going to know what your idea of "crap" is. Since you've got someone building it, they should have some good ideas for you based on your requests. For instance, this is a pretty traditional file cabinet to me, but this and this seem more attractive... to me. We also don't know how big your art prints are. Does it need to be tall and narrow? Short and wide? As big as a dinner table?

Sounds like you're not really looking for a file cabinet. You want a map or chart cabinet. Almost all of those I've ever seen have been metal, and I've never seen plans for a wood one. Good luck.
