Hey all, looking to dig a hole and create a sunken fire pit this summer. My question involves drainage.
I plan on digging down about 5 feet in a 20x20 square (ish). Once the snow is gone and the ground has thawed, I’m getting locators in and then mapping the actual spot.
It’ll be a few feet off my deck, plenty far from the house.
So how do I prevent it from filling with water during heavy rainfalls, and during the spring melt?
All I had considered to this point was some river rock or pea gravel in the bottom, a couple inches deep. Anything more than that, and we’ll be swimming lol.

My uncle has a sunken fire pit and honestly it sucks. Do you plan on having it be for decoration only or do you want to use it as a normal fire? Being in the ground, the fire doesn't get enough air to burn properly and the heat only goes up, not out. So people tend to stand right at the edge to feel warmth. I have a fire ring that's elevated 2 inches to allow air from the bottom to feed the fire. And my ring is short enough wood burns above the lip of it so heat can radiate sideways instead of up only. Food for thought on your idea Also my ring sits on a small concrete square. For clean up I move the ring out of the way and shovel the ashes. Takes less than 5 minutes and I get it all. Pea gravel would be a pain to clean
