r/woodworking on Reddit: Any ideas for a DIY locking mechanism for a folding tray table?
October 2, 2020 -
Bought this handy folding tray table. The legs have a nasty habit of folding inwards when the table is shifted to either side. I don't want a big mug of hot coffee or a bowl of soup winding up splashed on my bed. I'd like to make some kind of simple locking mechanism for the legs - anything to keep them from collapsing inwards when the tray is in use. I could just drill a hole through base and leg on both sides and slide a nail in, remove when folding. I don't have a drill currently (sorry), and there isnt a lot of room to drill because of the existing bolt. It's possible, but I'm wondering if there's any other solution you all might think of. Thanks!

same issue for lap desk. I put folding hinges on, but didn't they aren't "locking." Debating whether to just get new ones with a locking mechanism, but haven't seen anything low profile. contemplating just putting a screw into the flap "leg" and a screw into top of table, and then using a high quality rubber band screw to screw to create a tension support.

The problem with that is the overall construction quality. Solid 1 star reviews. Send it back and get something better.
