I’m planning to build a walnut media console which will be my largest project to date and I’d really love any feedback or cautions before embarking on this project. Here are some basic details for what I have planned and the attached renderings hopefully clarify it better:
-
3/4” thick solid walnut glued panels primarily but will use 1/4 plywood for a back panel
-
Reinforced miters for the cabinet. I’m considering purchasing a Domino Joiner (get those opinions ready) as this seems like the most straightforward-forward way to make it solid.
-
Soft close hinges for the three 1/2” thick doors with first two from left hinged on the left side and the last hinged on the right side
-
Aesthetic miter around the perimeter of the from cabinet to inset the 3 doors slightly
-
Routing door tops to provide the means to open the doors, thus no hardware
-
2 vertical partitions also made of 3/4” walnut panels
-
3 adjustable shelves with room for vinyl records on the left and right and AV equipment in the middle
My primary questions/concerns at this point are:
-
Will weight be an issue for the board thickness I am selecting and if I should consider any ways to reduce weight. Not sure that I really need 3/4” vertical partitions or extra mid stretchers for the skirt
-
If the joinery for the skirt is sane. I’m planning to use either mortise and tenons or possibly the Domino Joiner. I’m not quite certain how to line up mortise and tenons given the angles I’m aiming for with the legs, but maybe jigs with a router table could work somehow.
-
Will the skirt and legs support around 190lbs (124lbs cabinet, 30-60lbs of AV equipment + Vinyl Records). The runners are 1” x 1 1/2" and the top of the legs are 1 1/2” x 2” and then taper down.
-
Will the angle of legs be an issue? That is where the I assume the stress of the joints will be highest. I could consider making them less angled if needed.
-
Hoping the hinge layout won’t cause me problems. I’m considering build a small test cabinet for tools or what have you before doing it for real.
Just looking to avoid any major mistakes or if anyone has any good advice for a larger project like this. Thanks!
