March 9, 2023 - We used a spade shovel to dig a shallow trench between the fire center and the spot where we decided to put the propane tank. We had the supplies for making the fire pit before we had the tubing and ignitor system, so we decided to lay a short length of PVC pipe in the trench that was big enough to push the gas line through once it arrived. This way we were ready to start laying the first layers of fireplace bricks while we waited for those parts to arrive.

Our yard has a freestanding outdoor fireplace. For ease, less smoke, and to more frequently use it, I’d love to set something up for it to run off of a propane tank. I was thinking there must be a simple insert made for the sort of conversion. But in talking to a few of online fireplace / fire pit store, stainless steel burners setup for propane tanks can easily run upwards of $1000. I feel like I’m missing something since there are ample drop in fire pit burners in the $100-$200 range.
Any one do a conversion like this before? Any guidance on how to set this up rather economically. Appreciate any suggestions!

You’d need an open burning gas log outdoor set up. Yeah it’s probably gonna be a few grand including running the gas line to the fireplace and setting the tank. If you rig something up that’s on you, but no reputable fireplace shop is going to help you do that. Too much liability involved.

So as the title states I'm doing research for a natural gas fire pit. I have a gas line for my pool heater near where I want to build the fire pit so I planned on extending this for the fire pit (my BIL is a plumber so he would help with gas piping). After looking into it, it seems way more expensive to build my own with landscape blocks, purchase a burner table, burner controls, burner than to just by one already assembled. Am I going about this wrong?

I’m well over a thousand dollars and this isn’t even including the rocks to fill the pan, material for gas pipe, etc. Anyone have experience with this?

You can look at this two ways, 1. You can make a custom pit to your exact specs or 2. Buy one that is close enough. That is the difference in the cost.

When we moved into our house the previous owners had built a fire pit off to the side of the house. When it cooled off I decided to move it. I grabbed the first brick and it crumbles into dust. I soon realized they used no fire bricks and no pan. When I tried to throw it away the garbage man said they wouldn't take it. I had to throw out a couple bricks at a time for over a year.
