Umbrella Hole DIY (Because There's No Other Way To Say It) - Yellow Brick Home
April 26, 2017 - This was used as a preventative guide only; if your table is made from one layer, you could likely skip this step. Our umbrella pole has a 1 1/2″ diameter, so we picked up – you guessed it – a 1 1/2″ spade bit from the hardware store. Carefully using the pilot hole as a guide, Scott used the spade bit to go through the tabletop.

Make Your Own Umbrella Stand Side Table
February 16, 2024 - There are basically two options for securing an umbrella. The classic patio table with a hole in the middle. Or you have the heavy weighted bases the umbrella sits in. I don’t have space for a big table but I wanted more function than just a base, so I created a small DIY umbrella stand table.

r/DIY on Reddit: Can I drill an umbrella hole in a PVC-coated outdoor table?
September 22, 2022 -

I purchased a used patio set that includes a large oblong table which has PVC pipe material legs and a smooth white top. The bottom side of the table is fiberglass and it's very heavy, so I think the core of the table must be wood.

It has no umbrella hole, and I want to create one. I assume I'll have to use a hole saw. Is there any reason I shouldn't drill into this table? I don't want to ruin it. My husband thinks it could splinter or crack the material on top.

Another weird thing, not sure how significant it is--there was a small chip in this white tabletop material. It was smaller than a pencil eraser and barely noticeable. When we got this home I was cleaning the top with 409 heavy duty spray cleanser. Then I wiped it off and applied some spray citrus cleanser. I let it sit for a couple of minutes while I wiped the legs. When I stood back up, what looked just like blue ink was spreading from the little hole. I wiped it quickly, but it really stained and it took me a while to get it off. All I could think of was that something in that table had a reaction with something in the 409 or the citrus cleanser. I'm a little concerned that the same could happen if we drill an umbrella hole. I've queried google every which way I could think of to see if anyone else had come across the blue inky thing, but to no avail.

Here are some pictures of the top and bottom.

Normally if you drill/ saw it at high speed (rotation) and put very little pressure chipping should be minimal. You can put some tape on top of where you are drilling to reduce it a bit more. If there is wood inside water can get to it after drilling, so you might want to take some measures for that.

From the pictures you posted that appears to be epoxy bonded fiberglass, definitely not wood. It is possible to drill a hole through, however the material is not anywhere near as thick as the edge might suggest, it is probably only 3/8 of an inch or so, optimistically. It will also smell pretty darn bad, and any of the dust that gets kicked up from the drilling will essentially be powdered glass and resin, fairly severe inhalation hazards, so appropriate protective gear such as a respirator and safety glasses will be necessary. If you do cut a hole through it, you'll need to reinforce that hole with some kind of tube sleeve that will be able to resist the forces of the umbrella pole smacking into it during wind gusts, as the fiberglass of the table will most likely crack and split otherwise. I would recommend an alternative, that you look into purchasing a offset/overhang umbrella instead. Being that they're not attached directly to a table, you can maneuver and tilt them properly to shield you from early morning and late evening Sun, and actually shade every one of the table throughout the day instead of just one side as the sun moves across the sky. ⛱️ https://www.google.com/search?q=overhang+umbrella
