Portable Fire Pit for Beginners?
fireside outdoor makes a nice pop-up fire pit. It collapses down to about the size of a collapsing camp chair. You can get it with a heat shield to protect the ground under it also. It not cheap, but definitely cheaper than the solo stove fire pits. As for starting a fire, just buy some firestarters at the store and watch a YouTube video. If you have a constant flame source like a firestarter, it will be fairly easy to get the fire going. More on reddit.com

Portable Firepits
As a former Utah BLM camper/hiker, just having to bring your own wood (there isn’t much to scavenge and you’ll be trampling the cryptogamic soil to get it) would discourage me from trying to burn much. Propane and butane camp stoves are far easier to cook with, and have really become very affordable. There are some wonderful lamps that use stove fuel, too, so you could still have firelight. For that matter even Tiki torches would let you have fire without having to mess with wood. Happy camping! That is beautiful land and I envy you. More on reddit.com
